DAVID KEIR BUILDING, QUEEN’S UNIVERSITY BELFAST PROJECT PROFILE

JD MCGEOWN DELIVERED A COMPLETE ELECTRICAL INSTALLATION WITHOUT DISRUPTING THE UNIVERSITY’S ACADEMIC PROGRAMME OR COMPROMISING THE GRADE B1-LISTED BUILDING FABRIC… Full electrical services

JD McGeown Limited was appointed as electrical services contractor for the refurbishment of the David Keir Building. Its scope covered the complete electrical installation including LV distribution and sub-mains, small power and specialist laboratory power, LED lighting and lighting controls, fire detection and alarm, emergency lighting, containment and structured cabling infrastructure, through to full testing, commissioning and handover documentation. Every element was modelled in BIM before a single cable was pulled. A Grade B1-listed building dating from the 1950s, modern services had to be threaded through protected fabric without compromising it. Detailed survey work and BIM coordination allowed JD McGeown to prove routes digitally before committing anything on site. The

building also remained live throughout, with teaching, research and laboratory activity continuing around the works. The contractor worked to a phased possession programme built around the academic calendar, scheduling noisy operations outside teaching and examination periods and sequencing plant and material deliveries to minimise disruption across a busy South Belfast campus. Heritage buildings, live campuses and laboratory environments are demanding, with this project all three at once yet delivered without disruption to the University’s academic programme. John Fegan, System Control Manager, says, “It remains the clearest demonstration of what our engineering, BIM and site management teams achieve when the margin for error is effectively nil. “William Rogers Construction set the tone

from day one, with early engagement, open information sharing and genuinely collaborative planning. Issues were surfaced early and solved jointly rather than passed down the chain. It is a relationship we value highly and one we look forward to continuing.” Founded in Belfast in 1961 and still family led, JD McGeown is one of Northern Ireland’s leading electrical engineering specialists, operating from offices in Belfast, Derry/Londonderry and Dublin. The company delivers electrical contracting, building information technology, sustainable technologies, measured term contracts and facilities management across the education, healthcare, commercial, industrial and public sectors. Six decades on, the standard remains ‘get the engineering right’.
