Please remember that we offer ONLINE SHOPPING at Foodtown.com. We have a terrific website where you can build a shopping list and send it to the store. Our personal shoppers will go up and down the aisles shopping your order with the highest attention to detail. I always recommend starting with your heaviest groceries: packs of water, soda, detergent, cat litter, 12 packs, canned goods, etc. Let us do all that heavy lifting. We offer delivery in most of our stores, which makes life really easy. (We offer pickup at our stores in Putnam, Dutchess, and Delaware County, which still makes things easier.) I’d like to take a moment to thank our personal- shopping teams. These are the women and men who retrieve thousands of online shopping orders from Foodtown.com. They go up and down the aisles shopping all your orders as though they are shopping for themselves. They also work the phones, calling and texting their customers to make sure everything that gets delivered is exactly the way you intended. These are some very hardworking people, and we thank them for all their efforts. Most important of all, I hope you have a great Fourth of July. Remember that we have a very aggressive sale for the holiday so that you can get all your barbecue items at reduced prices. Literally everything you need for your July Fourth party is on sale, so please pick up the flyer or view it online, which may be even easier. Our Personal Shoppers for Foodtown.com Are Terrific!

With 10 years under his belt, Mario has become an irreplaceable member of the Foodtown team. He knows more about deli and appetizers than anyone in the Five Towns. EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT: Mario Pavlovic Messin’ With the 5 Towns Delicatessen There’s not a single task that is above Mario’s doing. He embodies the team approach that we truly value in all of our employees. “I’ll do whatever needs to be done,” says Mario. “Cheese, salads, homemade products — everything. Whatever needs to be done, I’ll do it.” But Mario doesn’t credit his relentless work ethic or commitment to Foodtown’s values. “My employees do everything. I have a great crew, and without them, I wouldn’t be able to do what I do. All the credit goes to them.” Working as a manager at Foodtown is a multifaceted role. “I make orders, and I make sure everything is tidy,” says Mario. “Then there’s sales numbers and inventory. I need to make the schedule that works for my employees. I like management. I love leading my team to new heights.” Mario’s style embodies the empowerment of his team. “I believe every employee is good for something,” he says. “It’s up to me to try and find the best way for them to succeed.” That’s a big part of why Mario’s team loves working with him and why the service at Foodtown of Hewlett is unbeatable.

Ask any employee about their favorite part of their job, and you’ll get a variety of responses. Mario’s answer is a perfect example of why he is our employee spotlight for this month: “My favorite part of work is when I can teach something to someone new.” Of course, he is quick to mention the people who make our company work. “I’ve known our customers for so long. I know them better than my neighbors. My employees and customers are the most important parts of my job.”

Swing on by the Five Towns today and say hi to Mario.

He’ll show you the best cut of prosciutto around.

Is This the End of Foodborne Illness?

The recent E. Coli outbreak serves as a constant reminder of how important it is to be cognizant of the threat of foodborne illness. The danger that romaine lettuce continues to pose across the country has made many Americans wary of eating it.

The Surprising Benefits of Watermelon Watermelon does more than just refresh you on a hot summer day; it has multiple health benefits, as well. Here a just a few ways this sweet treat can benefit you. Fight Inflammation The amino acids L-arginine and L-citrulline are abundant in watermelon. The more you can get these anti-inflammatory agents into your diet, the better your overall health will be. Balance pH The pH scale for acidity and alkalinity ranges from 0–14. Foods on the low end of the scale are acidic, while the foods higher on the scale are more basic. Your body wants to be around 7.4 on the pH scale. The basic nature of watermelon helps combat acidity and keep the body’s pH closer to neutral. Stay Hydrated The watermelon got its name because, well, it’s mostly water. On a hot day, the natural electrolytes and water content will help hydrate you and reduce the risks of prolonged heat exposure. The Software • The software helps the phone function as a luminometer, which measures light. • As the phone scans the sample, the software is programmed to look for particular characteristics. • If the food has E. coli, a green dot will appear on the device’s screen. What used to take days of preparation and shipping to a lab can now potentially take hours. The technology is still in its development phase, but the team at Purdue is working on commercializing it through a university-affiliated startup. Foodtown always holds itself to the highest of standards when it comes to the products we make available to our customers. We take all food threats very seriously, and you can trust that the groceries you buy have been vetted thoroughly with your health and safety in mind.

A new smartphone-based device developed by the Purdue Department of Food Science has the potential to change that. The Data • Studies done by the Food and Drug Administration suggest that about 48 million instances of foodborne illness occur every year. • At least 128,000 of those cases require hospitalization. • Approximately 3,000 cases result in death. The Hardware • The phone dock has a cradle that can hold a sample for the phone’s camera to analyze. • After the sample is adequately prepared for testing, it’s placed in a container attached to the phone dock. • The container is specially designed to provide an environment conducive to an accurate reading.

Does Fat Equal Flavor?......................... PAGE 6

Choose the Perfect Cut of Meat Every Time

There is one aspect of meat that almost all food critics will agree upon: Fat equals flavor.

Here are some simple pointers everyone can agree on:

While fat can be a turnoff for some, it serves as a natural tenderizer when cooked and brings out the best in the cut. If you’re looking to tantalize some taste buds at your next throwdown on the grill, follow these general guidelines to pick out the perfect steak every time. Choose the Right Cut Fattier cuts with a minimum of connective tissue result in tender, flavorful meat. High heat will melt the fat, but you don’t cook it long enough to break down connective fibers. The color matters, as well:

• Even coverage for any dry rubs or marinades is crucial. • Let your meat come to room temperature before cooking. • Clean your grill of any residue. • Heat your grill to a steady temperature before starting the meat. Grill to Perfection Opinions on grilling vary as much as they do on prep. Use these tips to bring out the best in your grilled meat: • Regardless of cooking times or doneness, always melt the fat. • Melted fat enhances the flavor profile of the leaner parts of meat. • Let your meat rest for a minimum of five minutes before cutting it, no matter how tempting it is to dig right in or check the middle.

• Bright cherry red for beef • Dark cherry red for lamb • Grayish-pink for pork Prep It Properly

Ask three people how to prepare meat for grilling, and you’ll get four opinions on the right way to do it.
