Transit Most people acknowledge that they would use transit if service was fast, frequent, dependable, and easy to use. Like a complete system of roads, sidewalks, and bikeways, transit must provide connections to the places people need or want to go at a time when they need to get there. As shown in Chapter 2, Fuquay-Varina’s public transit system consists of two fixed route express bus services. The FRX express is funded through NCDOT to lessen traffic issues related to the construction on Interstate 40 in Raleigh. Students and residents also benefit from Route 40X – the Wake Tech Express. Challenges and Opportunities
The Town of Fuquay-Varina is at a unique crossroads that will require balancing many challenges and opportunities to best prepare for future transit expansion. In the November 2016 election, Wake County residents approved a one-half cent local sales tax to fund County-wide transit. As part of this measure, municipalities like Fuquay-Varina are eligible for matching funds to develop and operate a local bus service. While this is a great opportunity, many links still need to be connected to provide successful transit alternatives in the Town. In addition to vehicles and infrastructure, transit must be supported by policies at the local level. The Town has already begun taking steps in this direction by developing a new land use plan that will help guide the decision-making process and provide guidance for smart growth. This is an essential factor in providing effective transit options; however, it is not the only element. The Town will need to continue to support transit as a feasible and imminent alternative mode for all users, as well as provide a social service for transit-depended individuals.
