Musahamaat Fikriyya – Constructs of Creativity L

Across fashion, leather goods and watchmaking, the horse remains a powerful source of inspiration, its legacy living on through the craftsmanship, symbols and design codes of influential luxury houses Hermes, Ralph Lauren, Gucci, Longchamp and Jaeger-LeCoultre.
and lies at the very origin of Jaeger-LeCoultre’s legend- ary Reverso watch. In each case, the horse represents far more than a decorative motif. It embodies a set of values – elegance, discipline, performance, freedom, endurance and craftsmanship – that continue to define luxury in the modern age. For some houses, the connection is literal. Hermès was established in the 19 th century making the finest quality saddles and harnesses for Europe’s equestrian nobility and royalty, while Jaeger-LeCoultre created the Rever- so in 1931 to protect the watches of polo-playing British Army officers in India. For others, the relationship is more aspirational. Ralph Lauren transformed polo into a global symbol of American elegance despite never having witnessed the sport when he launched his brand, while Gucci turned the humble horse bit into one of fashion’s most coveted signatures. Longchamp, meanwhile, took its name from Paris’ famed racecourse and adopted a gal- loping horse as its emblem, expressing movement and independence through leather goods designed for con- temporary life. Together, these maisons reveal how luxury continues to draw inspiration from an equestrian world that has largely vanished. What survives is not nostalgia, but a design language forged through centuries of interaction between horse and human. From saddle stitching and harness buckles to horsebit hardware and polo logos, today’s high-end objects still carry traces of the stable. They remind us that behind every great luxury house lies a deeper story – not simply of fashion or commerce, but of craftsmanship in motion. In many ways, the horse re- mains luxury’s original icon.

Long before luxury was measured in waiting lists, lim- ited editions or social media visibility, it was measured in horsepower. The horse shaped the rhythms of aristo- cratic life for centuries, carrying people, goods and ideas across continents, while giving rise to an entire culture of craftsmanship devoted to serving horse and rider. Sad- dles, bridles, harnesses, stirrups and riding attire were among the most sophisticated objects of their time, de- manding technical ingenuity, exceptional materials and meticulous handwork. Today, even as horses have largely disappeared from daily life, their legacy remains deeply embedded in the DNA of some of the world’s most cele- brated luxury brands. Few symbols have proven as enduring as the horse. It gal- lops across the silk scarves of Hermès, races through the logo of Longchamp, adorns the polo fields imagined by Ralph Lauren, inspires Gucci’s iconic Horsebit hardware
