Van Gogh spent a year here at Saint-Paul-de- Mausole, then a mental asylum, where he painted some of his most famous works. Today you can visit his room and walk through the surrounding gardens, seeing the original views and landscapes that appeared in his paintings. Just outside Saint-Rémy is Château des Alpilles , a magical family-owned hotel that feels less like a hotel and more like being invited to stay at some- one’s private château. Set in beautiful grounds be- neath enormous plane trees, it is the kind of place that makes you want to stay longer than planned. Driving through the countryside is part of the ex- perience. The roads pass vineyards, olive groves and tiny villages. If you love rosé, make the vine- yards themselves part of the trip. Many can be vis- ited, but it is best to arrange appointments ahead of time. Domaine de Domaine de Fontenille is somewhere I would stay rather than simply visit. The beautiful hotel sits among its own vineyards in the Luberon and has a wonderful restaurant. T heir Cuvée Alphonse Rosé is aged in oak , giving it a richer, rounder and more complex character than the pale, crisp rosés usually associated with Provence.
