About the author . . . E l m e r W i l l i a m E n g s t r o m , Chair man of the Executive Committee of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of the Radio Corporation of America, was born in 1901 in Min neapolis, Minnesota. Upon gradua tion from the University of Minne sota, he joined the General Electric Company and was assigned to engi neering development work on radio transmitting and receiving equip ment at Schenectady, New York. Later he was placed in charge of the company’s development and appa ratus design. In 1930, he assumed engineering responsibilities for RCA’s broadcast receiver development and production, carrying on this activity until he was called upon to organize research in the fields of apparatus and sys tems. He assumed his present position on January 1, 1966, after serving four years as President of RCA and for six years prior to that as Sen ior Executive Vice President of the Corporation. Dr. Engstrom has been awarded honorary degrees by fourteen col leges and universities, the Indus trial Research Institute Medal for “ distinguished leadership in indus trial research,” the Medal of Honor of the Electronic Industries Associa tion in recognition of his basic con tributions to the advancement of the electronic industry, the Charles Proteus Steinmetz Centennial Medal, the Founders Award of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engi neers “ for his leadership in manage ment and integration of research and development programs and for his foresighted application of the sys tems engineering concept in bring ing television to the public,” and the William Procter Prize for scientific achievement from The Scientific Re search Society of America. Dr. Engstrom is also a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of En gineering Sciences. In 1965, the King of Sweden conferred upon him the rank of Commander of the Royal Order o f Vasa.
