DECEMBER 20 Enemies Reconciled

Songs That Pluck Heartstrings Truly a great song collection that fills the soul •with fresh enthusiasm and spiritual uplift. A book that thrills every Christian and plants seeds of grace in yielding hearts.

“And you, that were sometime alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now hath he reconciled” (Col. 1:21). O God, our heavenly Father, who didst manifest Thy love to us by sending Thine only begotten Son into the world, that all might live through Him, pour into our hearts such love toward Him, that we may know the joy of those who have Christ in them, the hope of glory, and whose lives are hid with Christ in God. We thank Thee that we are found at the Throne of Grace, having been brought nigh by the precious blood that was shed, and made meet for the inheritance of the saints in light, through the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. Thy property is always to have mercy, and to forgive. Cleanse us from all unrighteousness, and make us all that Thou wouldst have us be.—G. H. L u n n . DECEMBER 21 Go to the Source "God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble" (Psa. 46:1). Do we ask how we may, like David, find strength in the midst of weakness, and rest and comfort when surrounded by sorrow and strife? The answer is surely by com munion with God, in meditation upon His Word, and laying before Him all the diffi culties that beset our path, and the tempta tions that assail us. Then gripping the thought that the God of all wisdom, love, and power is our God, pledged to supply our needs and to bring us safely to Him self, we may cast ourselves upon His al mighty arm, and encourage ourselves in the assurance that nothing in life or in death can separate us from His love in Christ Jesus.—F. J. H orsefield . There is a picture by one of the great Italian artists. An angel stands before the empty cross. The body of Christ has been taken away, but the crown of thorns has fallen on the ground. The angel has picked up the crown.and is feeling the sharpness of the thorns. He is perplexed; he cannot understand it all, but stands in adoring wonder before the amazing mystery of the cross. There is much, oh, so much, that we cannot understand; but this we may know, that the Eternal Son of God in love for our perishing souls died the death of the tree to save us. No wonder, then, that Paul cried, “God forbid that I should glory save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ.” — W illiam W h y te . DECEMBER 23 Conquering the Last Enemy “O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory?" (1 Cor. 15:55). We have promises of God as thick as daisies in summer meadows, that death, which men most fear, shall be to us the DECEMBER 22 Glory in the Cross “But God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world is crucified unto me, and I unto the world" (Gal. 6:14).
