Marne got to know him as a cyclist and helped him improve and become stronger in his sport. Now, Shayne’s ready for the National Senior Games or the USA Cycling Master Time Trial Championships, averaging a 24mph cycling speed! Throughout life, he has been a competitor in running, cross country skiing and cycling as his favorite. As of recent years, to name just a couple of his wins, he has taken a cycling Gold Medal for the 10K and a bronze in the 5K at the 2018 Texas Senior Games. One has to wonder if his fight to overcome the challenges of Apert Syndrome has been attributed to his determined nature. He’s had this since birth, it’s a rare and genetic condition, causing distinctivemalformations of the skull, face, hands, and feet. His condition required over 30 reconstructive surgeries, all before the age of 18 and then went on to graduate from BSU with a degree in Mass Communications! He’s resilient, in 2004 he broke his hip and injured the shoulder. After that, he started to see Marne Waldo, MPT, for physical therapy, at the Kelliher Clinic. In 2019 he injured his hamstring from a fall out of the

7 TIPS YOU CAN DO ON YOUR OWN Physical therapy treatments can help improve your health, but they only work if you apply healthy lifestyle choices in your everyday life, as well. Some tips you can do on your own to become healthier, stronger, and more active include: 1. Taking care of aches and pains. Don’t let these long-term problems linger. Exercise regularly, even if it’s just taking a short walk every day.

4. Maintaining a nutritious diet and controlling portion. Make sure your food intake is nutritious and portioned. By chewing your food thoroughly, you won’t feel as if you have to eat as much. 5. Drinking more water. Water keeps your body systems functioning at an optimum level. 6. Breathing!Work on your deep breathing in order to increase your oxygen intake and get your lymphatic systemmoving. 7. Getting enough sleep. Sleep at least 8 hours a day. HOMEMADE BLACK BEAN VEGGIE BURGERS

INGREDIENTS • 1 (16 ounce) can black beans, drained and rinsed • ½ green bell pepper, cut into 2 inch pieces • ½ onion, cut into wedges • 3 cloves garlic, peeled • 1 egg • 1 tablespoon chili powder • 1 tablespoon cumin • 1 teaspoon Thai chili sauce or hot sauce • ½ cup bread crumbs

DIRECTIONS 1. If grilling, preheat an outdoor grill for high heat, and lightly oil a sheet of aluminum foil. If baking, preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C), and lightly oil a baking sheet. 2. In a medium bowl, mash black beans with a fork until thick and pasty. 3. In a food processor, finely chop bell pepper, onion, and garlic. Then stir into mashed beans. 4. In a small bowl, stir together egg, chili powder, cumin, and chili sauce. 5. Stir the egg mixture into the mashed beans. Mix in bread crumbs until the mixture is sticky and holds together. Divide mixture into four patties. 6. If grilling, place patties on foil, and grill about 8 minutes on each side. If baking, place patties on baking sheet, and bake about 10 minutes on each side.
