Use this antenna if you live a considerable distance from the FM station or if you live in a congested metropolitan area. F olded D ipole w ith D irector and R eflector It sounds complicated but it’s merely another modification of the folded dipole. With this anten­ na you receive signals from only one direction. But you pick up stations from as far away as 125 miles. For maximum reception use a rotating device. Use this antenna if you live more than 70 miles from an FM station. Use it also in congested areas, or if several obstacles cut off your “ line of sight” path to the radio station.

Some FM radios are now made with built-in antennae. They’re fine for portability. They will also suffice if you live where a per­ manent antenna can’t be installed. On the other hand, you just can’t get good reception from distant stations by means o f a built-in antenna. I nside vs . O utside A n tennae Get an outside antenna if you possibly can. There are two rea­ sons for this. First, with an out­ side antenna it’s easier to get that all-important antenna height. Sec­ ond, indoor antennae receive much interference from nearby metal objects.

This is one of the most popular FM antennae. It is rather low priced. And it receives signals primarily from two areas. Kits for this and other antenna types can be purchased at most radio stores. Assembly takes only a screwdriver and a few minutes’ time. F olded D ipole w ith R eflector Here we have a modification of the above. It will receive signals from only one direction. But it picks up stations from as far away as sixty miles. Because this antenna is highly directional, you might need a rotating device to pick up widely-scattered stations.
