Mathematics & Statistics Applications
Prerequisites A minimum of 12 credits for either the Year 12 Mathematics couse or the Year 12 Statistics course. Description This course is designed for students wishing to continue Mathematics & Statistics at Level 3 through practical, real-world applications. Students will study selected Achievement Standards from both Mathematics & Statistics, developing quantative reasoning and problem- solving skills in areas such as optimisation, network modelling, experimental design, and statistical analysis. Successful completion of the course provides University Entrance and prepares students for a wide range of tertiary pathways. However, it is not appropriate for students looking to pursue medicine, engineering, physical and data science, and statistics at tertiary level.
Assessment This course contributes towards NCEA Level 3 and University Entrance. Assessment is entirely through internally assessed Achievement Standards. Depending on group interests and time, entry into an external examination in either Calculus or Statistics may be possible. The following Achievement Standards will be assessed: • AS 91574 (3 credits – internal) Apply linear programming in solving problems. • AS 91576 (2 credits – internal) Use critical path analysis to solve problems. • AS 91580 (4 credits – internal) Investigate time series data. • AS 91581 (4 credits – internal) Investiage bivariate measurement data. • AS 91583 (4 credits – internal) Conduct an experiment to investigate a situation using experimental design principles. • AS 91587 (3 credits – internal) Apply systems of simultaneous equations in solving problems.
