2023 APEGA Annual Report

Shift the Culture

“I’ve been insulted openly and over prolonged periods by a male colleague… implying that I may be a sex worker because of my place of birth.” – Professional engineer “My male colleague treats me like I don’t belong in the overall company culture. I have informed my immediate boss about the racist behaviour, and he said that my coworker has good intentions. What is the good intention of being racist, condescending, and disrespectful?” – Project manager

These were real experiences that happened to women engineers and geoscientists in Alberta. Their stories were shared in a series of powerful videos—part of a bold APEGA awareness campaign that aimed to elevate their voices and start necessary conversations about misogyny, sexism, and racism in the workplace. Read by APEGA volunteers, the stories were submitted anonymously by APEGA professionals as part of the research for our report Women in the Workplace: A Shift in Industry Culture , published in 2021. The videos explored the top barriers identified in the report: •toxic “bro” culture •gender-based bias, discrimination, and harassment. •maternity and parental leave challenges •inequity in career development and advancement

The response to the videos has been overwhelmingly positive and has sparked valuable conversations. •Our campaign materials have received more than one million views. •We have reached more than 50 per cent of our membership. • The Women in the Workplace report has been downloaded more than 500 times. •Most importantly, in 2023, we delivered 31 training sessions to 2,350

attendees— 638 of whom attended directly because of this campaign.
