Pedostop: Child Friendly Interview Rooms When we talk about child protection, we often focus on procedures, investigations, or psychological and legal support. Yet, there is something fundamental that is often overlooked: the environment in which a child will have to share their experience. This is where healing begins, where trust is rebuilt, and justice starts to take shape.
4 out of 10 persons in Mauritius have been abused.
According to a recent study conducted by Analysis Kantar, 42% of Mauritians have, at least once, experienced a form of sexual aggression. That is four in ten individuals walking among us, carrying silent scars. Pedostop’s mission is to protect children from sexual violence, ensuring they receive the care and justice they deserve, and raising awareness to break the cycle of abuse. A child who has been a victim of sexual abuse often arrives in a state of immense fear. They feel lost,anxious, and sometimes even terrified of adults, uniforms, or institutions.This is precisely why Child Friendly Interview Rooms are so important. A child’s voice deserves to be heard in an environment that nurtures. Behind every repainted wall lies a powerful intention: to show the child they will be welcomed differently here. The colours can completely transform an atmosphere. They can bring calm, reassurance, and make a space feel less intimidating. Transforming a room is about transforming the experience of a child when they must find the courage to speak. It may seem simple from the outside, but it can make a tremendous difference. In collaboration with Pedostop and the staff of the Brigade pour la Protection de la Famille, seven child-friendly interview rooms will be created across the island.
