NGO Not a Number – Revamping the Prison Petit Verger Visitor’s Centre
Not A Number is an NGO dedicated to reducing re-offending and re-imprisonment rates through rehabilitation, reintegration, and empowerment providing holistic support to people in prison and after their release. An often-overlooked aspect of the criminal justice system is the experience of families. Family bonds and regular visits are a source of hope and strength for detainees and are crucial in supporting their social reintegration. The Visitor Centre located at Petit Verger Prison, which serves as a waiting and reception area for visitors travelling from across the island, had become run-down and unmaintained. The project aimed to turn it into a more welcoming and functional environment. It was made possible through the collective efforts of Sofap volunteers especially from the technical and maintenance teams, as well as volunteers from the NGO Not a Number, and detainees and officers of the Mauritius Prison Service. Improvements included a complete repainting of both the interior and exterior of the building, the creation of a “Kids’ Corner” with kid-sized furniture made from recycled materials, toys and books, as well as a colourful setting for younger children. A new exterior seating area was created with benches; shade sails and blinds were installed to protect from the sun. The children’s swing set was refurbished and shaded, making it a much-loved spot for younger visitors. Additional plants and greenery were added to soften the space and make it more welcoming, with plant boxes produced by detainees from Beau Bassin Prison using old pallets. Signage was added to help direct first-time visitors, and a new noticeboard and television were also placed inside the centre to provide visitors with relevant information. Seeing visitors sitting on the newly constructed benches in the shade outside, children having fun in the kids’ corner and enjoying the outdoor swing while they wait to visit has been deeply rewarding for those involved.
