CNR CONSIDERS POSSIBLE RAILWAY LINE SHUTDOWN

There is a possibility that Canadian National (CN) will discontinue the Alexandra subdivision railway, which runs from Hawkesbury through Vankleek Hill to North Glengarry. CN has recently submitted this 30-kilo- metre rail line for potential discontinuance and notified the Town of Hawkesbury within the last three weeks or so. “It is certain that we do not want the railway line to be shut down,” said Daniel Gatien, the Town of Hawkesbury’s Chief Administrative Officer. “That will have an impact on the municipality.” According to Gatien, CN did not give any explanation as to the reasoning behind the possible discontinuance of this subdivision. “This is why we are preparing our file now in order to meet with CN, to get an explanation on their part,” said Gatien. He had no information yet, however, as to when such a meeting will take place. The Town of Hawkesbury is also in the process of working closely with the busi- nesses that will be affected by this railway line shutdown. According to Gatien, the town is also working with MP Francis Drouin and the United Counties of Prescott and Russell in order to “bring forth our arguments to CN and ensure that the railway line will not be closed.” Once a railway line is submitted for dis- continuance, CN must wait a year before they can make it official. After the year deadline, CN can put up the railway line for sale to the public. If there are no buyers, CN must offer the line to all three levels of government for the salvage value of the line. &/#3&'r#3*&'4 PRÉCISION Une précision doit être apportée au sujet d’une déclaration faite dans un article paru dans la Tribune-Express du 1er novembre, intitulé Place Mont-Roc : éclairage nouveau sur l’incident mortel. L’article mentionnait que « selon le Code du bâtiment de l’Ontario en vigueur à l’époque, la résidence aurait dû être équipée d’un système automatique de gicleurs ». En fait, au moment de l’incident, les gicleurs n’étaient pas obligatoires selon le Code du bâtiment de l’Ontario. L’article aurait dû lire que « la résidence aurait pu être équipée d’un système automatique de gicleurs. » La célébration du jour de Souvenir à Saint- Isidore aura lieu le 9 novembre, à 11 h, devant la cénotaphe de la rue de l’Aréna. Le départ du défilé se fera de l’école de Saint- Isidore à 10 h 45. Les membres de la Légion participeront. Il est possible que le Canadien National abandonne le chemin de fer de subdivision Alexandra, qui va de Hawkesbury à Glengarry Nord en passant par Vankleek Hill.
