Continuing Excellence: Strategy for Growth 2023-2026

CROSS-CUTTING THEMES

Underpinning our vision and objectives as set out in the strategic themes of Research and Innovation and Learning and Teaching, is a series of cross cutting themes or enabling strategies to embed our values and deliver benefits and improvements for the Faculty, the University and beyond. They reflect our ambitions in a comprehensive, research-led university.

and beyond, we will grow our global reputation for academic-industry collaborations with private, public and voluntary sector organisations of all shapes and sizes to drive economic growth, foster prosperity, enrich the local community and Welsh culture and contribute to the health and wellbeing of our citizens. We will continue to capitalise on external funding to help support research and innovation, building on the success of projects such as Accelerate Healthcare Technology Centre, the Awen Institute, BEACON, CALIN and PATROLS and now the transformational Swansea Bay City deal Campuses project. INFRASTRUCTURE The Faculty has been at the forefront of the University’s digital and physical infrastructure development since the creation of its flagship research facilities at the Institute of Life Science and the Data Science Building.

We will also review space requirements in line with enterprise development projects, including completion of Phase 1 in line with City Deal targets, and align Health and Safety activities to the University’s policies and procedures. We will look to commercialise our infrastructure offering across a range of areas in close collaboration with others and in a way that is scalable across the university. We are proud hosts of SUSim, Swansea University Simulation suite. Our vision for simulation-based education is to embed interprofessional learning throughout our suite of clinical, health and social care programmes not only for the benefit of our students and teachers but also to advance patient, team, and system safety practices through hands- on learning. As well as continuing to upgrade and refurbish existing Faculty facilities, we will continue to develop our digital and IT landscape, ensuring state-of-the-art research and teaching space that is fit for purpose for the future student. This work will be carried out in the context of the university’s strategic planning and priorities. SUSTAINABILITY Maintaining the success and reputation of the Faculty relies on continued recruitment and retention of students and staff, and sustained revenue generation through grants, funding and commercial opportunities. We are committed to maintaining and improving educational opportunities and student satisfaction and to being a destination of choice for both undergraduates and postgraduates, from the UK, EU and overseas. We are also committed to further strengthening our research and innovation, to ensure commercial viability, while also contributing to University initiatives, the City Deal project and the wider region, and the University Sports Agenda.

PEOPLE AND CULTURE We are committed to the development of a Faculty staff community, bringing together academic and professional services teams and individuals from across the faculty, in a way that is fully aligned to the University people and culture strategy. We will strive to improve staff wellbeing and welfare through effective and supportive induction, supporting and upskilling effective line management, delivering and meaningful ongoing support and professional development. We will prioritise personal development and contribution of staff through succession planning, career progression and review of mentoring and ensure fair, equitable and relevant workload allocation through the creation of a task and finish group to develop proposal and methodology, linking in with pan-University initiatives. Through a redeveloped EDI committee structure and a shared Faculty and University agenda, we will have a strong focus on equality, diversity, and inclusion. We will also bring together a community to raise the profile of, and celebrate, Welsh language and culture, with a fully operational Welsh Language committee and increased bilingual opportunities.

ENTERPRISE AND SPORT The University prides itself on its participation, commitment, and achievements in sport at elite, student and community levels. The Swansea Bay City Deal Campuses Project, led by the University in partnership with Swansea Council, Swansea Bay and Hywel Dda University Health Boards and ARCH, will attract inward investment from companies in the MedTech and Sports Tech sector that will further transform our sporting offer, in terms of facilities, opportunities, sport, health and wellbeing related courses, significant partnerships and our contribution to the health, wealth and wellbeing of the region. INTERNATIONALISATION As well as bringing the world to Wales, we are committed to taking Wales to the world, raising the profile of our research, innovation, language, and culture on the global stage. We are committed to capitalising on the University’s key International Strategic Partnerships and to developing a range of international opportunities for students and staff alike. We are also committed to working with other key partners in line with the university strategy to support our world-leading research and education. ENGAGEMENT AND THE CIVIC MISSION We are part of a research-led University located in a region where economic and social development are a major priority. Applying a health improvement lens to economic development for the benefit of the region, Wales
