Treating Back and Neck Pain in Modern Dentistry: A Survival Guide for the Rest of Your Career Timothy Caruso, PT, MBA, MS, Cert. MDT, CEAS
Is your career hazardous to your physical and mental health? Perhaps killing you slowly? Anaesthesia, dental techniques, materials, equipment and approaches have evolved, yet daily discomfort continues to be tolerated by many dental practitioners. The patients are pain free, but how about the dental staff? Are you someone who has a nagging pain in your neck or your back that no longer goes away? Perhaps you have some numbness and tingling in your foot, or your dominant hand is a bit clumsier than it used to be? Your sleep is disturbed, and you wake up with a headache? Advil and Motrin no longer “take care of it.” What are you going to do? Before going to the orthopedic/neurosurgeon for surgical intervention and before “chronic” becomes part of your vocabulary, come and give this a listen! Learning Objectives: • Discuss the incidence and prevalence of cervical/lumbar pain in the dental profession and the pain generators • Discuss the unique musculoskeletal needs of the dental profession and the effects of prolonged static loading • Discuss Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy (McKenzie Method) for treatment of referred/radicular back and neck pain as an alternative to or screening prior to surgical intervention
