ASM22 Final Program

Pediatric Airway Therapy 2022

Steve Carstensen, DDS

When it comes to the airway and SRBD’s, children are not miniature adults. Birth to adolescence is the most critical time to screen children for airway problems. During the growth years, the shape of the face and the airway can be guided to form healthy breathing adults. This course helps attendees reframe their thought process and rethink their clinical systems, so they can better identify children at risk and recommend treatments that will help them grow to their maximum potential. The ways to identify exactly what is going “wrong” are rapidly expanding. This course will draw on the latest research and guide the general dentist team on how to talk with families about choices for their small children. Collaboration with pediatric dentists and orthodontists takes an approach different than for early childhood caries: learners will never see children in their practice the same again! Learning Objectives: • Signs and symptoms to look for in the youngest child, and how to enroll families in identifying children at risk of breathing disorders both when awake and asleep • What treatment pathways are available? Learners will be able to present therapy choices based on the etiology of what is disturbing breathing • There are many treatments that do not require specialized training and can be implemented right away in any dental office. Learners will be confident in recommending some early, easy, non-invasive treatments
