ASM22 Final Program

TMD, Nasal Breathing and Their Connection to Sleep-Related Breathing Disorders

Steve Carstensen, DDS

There is a tendency to think about one problem at a time when interviewing patients and making medical decisions about therapy. This course will allow the dentist to see the connection between people who have compromised breathing during sleep, their nasal breathing habits and complaints about facial pain and TMJ problems. Clinical treatment that does not take all factors into account can be incomplete, leaving patients and doctors frustrated. On the other hand, a comprehensive evaluation and consideration of all factors affecting the patient’s presentation lead to satisfaction and success. Learning Objectives: • Understand the neuroanatomy and neurophysiology that connects nasal breathing with signs and symptoms commonly reported in a patient complaining of facial pain and TMJ disorders • Identify many clinical details that assist the dentist with medical decision-making related to these disorders • Know easy-to-implement therapies that may be unexpected in a dental office, allowing the provider a deeper relationship with their patients in practice
