So Your Patient Has Been Diagnosed with Cancer — Now What?

The goal of this course is to provide the dentist with fundamental knowledge to allow them to safely prepare their patients dentally to undergo cancer treatment. This course will make dentists aware of the importance of a pre-radiation dental assessment to prevent xerostomia-related caries and osteoradionecrosis; the importance of a preanti-resorptive dental assessment to prevent MRONJ; the importance of a prechemotherapy dental assessment to eliminate possible sources of infection; and the complete blood count and how it should be interpreted in a private- practice setting. Learning Objectives: • Educate and dentally prepare patients who will undergo head-and- neck radiation • Educate and dentally prepare patients who will be treated with high- dose anti-resorptive therapy • Educate and dentally prepare patients who will be undergoing high-dose chemotherapy, including how to safely treat patients with hematologic malignancies and when not to treat

Dr. Erin Watson graduated with the gold medal from the Faculty of Dentistry at McGill University in 2012. She has completed a residency in Hospital Based Dentistry at Mount Sinai hospital in Toronto, as well as a master’s in health administration at University of Toronto. She is a dentist in the Department of Dental Oncology at Princess Margaret Cancer Centre in Toronto. She provides dental care for head- and-neck cancer patients, patients at risk of medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw and patients undergoing autologous and allogenic stem-cell/bone-marrow transplants. Dr. Watson also conducts clinical research, with a special interest in dental care for patients with acute leukemia, quality improvement and standards of care.
