ASM22 Final Program

The Five Pitfalls of Cancer Therapy and How to Avoid Them

Erin Watson, DMD

The goal of this course is to provide the dentist with fundamental knowledge to allow them to safely provide dental care for cancer patients. With current statistics suggesting that three in five Canadians will develop cancer in their lifetime, dentists will be seeing an increasing number of patients in their practice who either have cancer or a history of cancer. This course will make dentists aware of: long-term side-effects of cancer treatments and their impact on oral health, prevention of unnecessary long-term sequelae of cancer treatments and when a patient can be safely managed in a private- practice setting. Learning Objectives: • To identify cancer treatments that may place patients at risk of profound

xerostomia and caries, with strategies for management • To avoid significant complications in patients at risk of

osteoradionecrosis and medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw • To feel comfortable providing safe dental care to the vast majority of cancer patients, including patients undergoing chemotherapy, and when to refer
