Evidence Based Use of Antibiotics – Part 1: Antibiotics In General Dental and Oral Surgery Practice
Antibiotics are essential for treating severe dental infections and preventing distant site infections, and are a critical part of surgical treatment in the oral cavity. Failure of antibiotics to treat spreading infections can be devastating to patients. In addition, the side effects of antibiotics can be life-threatening. Balancing the benefits and risks of antibiotics is vital for keeping patients safe. This session will focus on the use of antibiotics in general practice and in extraction of impacted wisdom teeth, dental implants and alveolar bone grafts. Learning Objectives: • To introduce the principles of antibiotic stewardship • To discuss therapeutic and prophylactic indications for dental antibiotic prescribing • To understand the when, why and how of dental antibiotic prescribing in impacted wisdom teeth surgery, dental implant surgery and alveolar bone grafting Course Code: F036FL Room: 204 – North Building Time: 9:30 am – 12:00 pm Type: Lecture Audience: Dentist; Dental Hygienist; Dental Assistant; Office Personnel RCDSO QA Program: Category 2 (3 CE Credits) Fee + HST: Ticketed Free Dr. Wendy Thompson is a clinical and academic general dentist at University of Manchester (England) with an academic focus on antibiotic prescribing and stewardship.
