Evidence Based Use of Antibiotics – Part 2: Rational Antibiotic Use: Perspectives of an Endodontist and an Infectious Diseases Pharmacist Antibiotics, essential to dental practice, must be used judiciously to preserve their effectiveness. The side effects of antibiotics can be devastating to patients. In this session, the perspectives of an endodontist and a pharmacist will highlight the latest data related to the management of dental pain, the prevention of post-operative pain and flare-ups, issues related to re-treatment and some newer applications of antibiotics topically to disinfect the infected pulp space. The dangers of clindamycin, the myth and management of penicillin allergy, and the new ADA Guidelines on Antibiotics will be discussed. Learning Objectives: • Identify the efficacy of systemic antibiotics in managing various endodontic conditions, the appropriate antibiotics to use and current research on topical antibiotics for disinfection of the pulp space • Describe clinical guidelines for the treatment of oral infections and antibiotic prescribing for prevention of distant site infections • Examine the risk to benefit ratio to antibiotic use in patients

Dr. Ashraf Fouad obtained his DDS and MS at the University of Iowa. He served on the faculty in several dental schools in the US and is currently professor and Chair, Department of Endodontics, and Director, Advanced Endodontics, at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Dr. Fouad has published over 95 peer- reviewed manuscripts, edited, and co-authored two textbooks, and is an Associate Editor of the Journal of Endodontics. Dr. Katie Suda is professor of Medicine and Pharmacy at the University of Pittsburgh and a Research Health Scientist with the VA Center for Health Equity Research and Promotion. Dr. Suda is a national expert in outpatient prescribing patterns and antibiotic stewardship. As a clinical pharmacist with additional training in health outcomes and epidemiology, Dr. Suda’s research interests include antimicrobial and opioid pharmacoepidemiology and effectiveness of implementation strategies to improve prescribing. Dr. Suda has received funding from federal and non-federal sources, written more than 170 peer reviewed papers, and received awards for teaching and research.
