Occlusion: What, When, How, and Why
Dr. James Metz, DDS, FACD, ABDSM
Patients can present with a variety of problems. How does a dentist work through the process of restoring occlusal function? The question has been pondered for several generations of dentists. The topic is complex if taken as a whole. So, how is broken down into manageable task that pleases the patient and does not cause the dentist turmoil? Today, many parts of the puzzle have been described in the literature. The presentation will bring together the current knowledge, nearly 50 years of experience, and knowledge gleaned from personal experience with many great dental educators. Learning Objectives: • Value of working in centric related occlusion, how it can be predictably recorded, and retained and identifying, caring for, and maintaining the TMD patient • Restoring the severely deteriorated dentition, determining most advantageous occlusal scheme, and understanding vertical dimension of occlusion • Determining the impact of the airway on present condition of the patient and what conditions a dentist can improve.
