Early Detection of Oral Cancer in Dental Practice

This course will discuss various aspects of oral cancer important to an oral-care provider. It will introduce technologies such as visualization devices and quantitative cytology, as well as conventional histopathology for assisting oral-care providers in early detection and the diagnostic workup of patients with suspicious oral (pre-)malignant lesions. Visual demonstrations of these chairside procedures will also be provided. Learning Objectives: • Epidemiology, clinical science and presentation of oral cancer • Roles of the oral-care provider in an oral cancer diagnosis • Screening and diagnostic workup for oral precancer lesions

Dr. Samson Ng is a Canadian and American board-certified specialist in oral medicine, and oral and maxillofacial pathology. He graduated from the University of British Columbia (UBC) and completed a post-graduate hospital residency in the General Practice and Oral Medicine and Oral Pathology residency program at UBC/ Vancouver General Hospital (VGH). He is Clinical Associate professor at the UBC, attending staff at the Department of Dentistry of the VGH and attending staff in the Program of Oral Oncology/Dentistry in the BC Cancer Agency.
