ASM22 Final Program

The Growing Challenge of Dry Mouth and Oral Lesions with Proven, Evidence-Based and Highly Effective Solutions

Lucy Pavao, RDH

Dry mouth, also called “xerostomia,” is now affecting approximately one in five patients entering your dental office. This reduction of the salivary flow and quality of saliva is mainly caused by polymedication (more than 500 drugs, of which 63 per cent are from the 200 most prescribed), diverse illnesses and some medical treatments, such as radiation therapy and chemotherapy. Salivary hypofunction also increases with longevity. The present Canadian population over the age of 60 years is 7.2 million people and is expected to double in the next 25 years. Oral science is ready to support your addressing this growing challenge. There are many oral diseases related to dry mouth: oral lesions, caries, gum disease and halitosis. These patients often only end up with palliative solutions. Now, there are new palliative, preventive and curative solutions available to significantly help with their condition. Learning Objectives: • Educate your dental team on the growing challenge of dry mouth and oral lesions with proven, evidence-based and highly effective solutions • Identify more accurately your patients experiencing dry mouth and oral lesions • Become confident in recommending your patients the optimal and appropriate solutions for their conditions
