Listeriosis warning from Health Canada
The Public Health Agency of Canada and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) have both issued public health alerts on the risk of listeriosis posed in a lot shipment of packaged salad products from the Dole companay’s American pro- cessing plant in Springfield, OH. A recall is in effect. Health Canada is working with all federal and provincial agencies and also the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to investigate the situation. The CFIA has a complete list of all suspect products covered under the warning and investigation at www. inspection.gc.ca. The suspect products, both under the Dole brand name and others, are identified by the letter “A” at the start of the manufac- turing code found on the packages. Anyone having such products should wrap it in plas- tic for disposal and then wash both hands and the food container area with warm soapy water. Food contaminated with listeriamay not smell or look spoiled. Investigators have so far confirmed seven cases of listeriosis scattered over five pro- vinces, including three cases in Ontario, one in Québec and the remainder in the Atlantic provinces. All cases were reported to local health agencies between September 2015 and January 2016. All cases required hospital treatment and there is one fatality though there is no confirmation yet whether listeriosis was the cause or contributed to the death. Those most at risk from the listeria bac- teria include pregnant women and their unborn or newborn offspring, seniors, and people with weakened immune systems. Symptoms of mild listeriosis may include fever, muscle ache, nausea, and diarrhea. Severe case symptoms include headache, poor coordination, seizures, and neck stif- fness.
