Maison Interlude House organized a last minute memorial walk Friday, September 25, for three women who were murdered Tuesday morning. “I just felt they weren’t getting enough attention,” said Jocelyn Beauchamp from Maison Interlude House. “!ere needs to be an outcry about howmany women are injured due to violence.” A silent procession of approximately 20 women walked through L’Orignal in memory of the slain women, Anastasia Kuzyk, Nathalie Warmerdam and Carol Culleton. Accused of the crime is 57-year-old Basil Borutski. “$e man came out of prison and was recognized as a violent man,” said Micheline Duval, Communications and Program Worker at Maison Interlude House. “$e life of a woman is worth a moment of re%ection. What about the lives of three?” $e body of the "rst victim, 36-year-old Anastasia Kuzyk, was found at 9 a.m. Tuesday, September 22, near Szczipior Road in Wilno, Ontario. Information at the scene led police to the second victim, 48-year-old Nathalie Warmerdam, in a residence near Foymont Road. $e third victim, 66-year-old Carol Culleton, was found at 11:10 a.m. in a residence approximately 30 minutes from Wilno. “$e death of these women was shocking,” said Beauchamp. “I feel attached to this event because I work with women every day. $is

is not something isolated. It happens all the time. It occurs in the same proportion here as it does anywhere else.” Several schools, businesses and a courthouse were under lockdown while OPP were searching for the suspect. Extra security measures were issued for Parliament Hill, as police thought the suspect was heading to Ottawa. Borutski was arrested around 2:30 p.m. in Kinburn, in western Ottawa.$e day’s events left residents of the small community in shock. Basil Joseph Borutski was arrested and charged with three counts of "rst-degree murder in the slayings of the three women. Borutski appeared in a Pembrooke Court Wednesday, September 23. $e court has issued a publication ban on all evidence related to the case. Borutski is banned fromcontacting at least two dozen people connected with the case. All three victims had dated Borutski in the past. Court documents paint a disturbing

picture of a man accused of consistently threatening and assaulting women despite court orders and probation conditions. “He had conditions for his release, and he refused to sign them,” said Beauchamp. “I think we need to work together. $e justice system is not helping women.” Some past charges against Borutski include assault causing bodily harm, possessing a crossbow against court order, destruction of property, auto theft, mischief under $5,000, breach of probation orders, and threatening to kill a woman whose name is under court publication ban, in 2012. “$ere is no assessment done on prisoners prior to release on the provincial level,” said Beauchamp. “Could this have prevented these women’s murders? I think so. If we say nothing, we are all permitting this to happen.” Borutski will appear in court again, Monday, October 5, via video link.
