ON GRATITUDE ... HOW I CAME TO LOVE THE WORK I DO

So often, people get caught up in the chaos that surrounds the holidays and forget why they are celebrating in the first place. In the days leading up to Thanksgiving, families brave the busy stores to shop for supplies, rid their houses of every speck of dust, and spend hours prepping the plump turkeys. This hectic schedule causes many people (myself included) to lose sight of what is truly important this time of year: gratitude. As I reflect on everything and everyone I’m grateful for, it’s hard not to be transported back to where it all started for me. I’ve known that I wanted to join the medical field since the day I started seventh grade. The inspiration fueling that decision came from one of the strongest women I know: my mother. As a registered nurse, my mom would emphatically recount tales of her experiences working in the operating room, and as an eager young man, I consumed those stories. When I started to seriously pursue my dream of being a doctor, I used my mom’s tales for motivation. I remembered them when I stayed up until 2 a.m. studying for chemistry finals, and I remembered them when I woke up at 5 a.m. for football practice during my years at Notre Dame. I also remembered them on my first day of medical school. The first class I walked into at Tulane University Medical School was an anatomy course, and the second I learned about dissections, I became confident I was going to be a doctor — and without a shadow of a doubt that I was going to be

a surgeon. This might sound strange to readers outside the medical profession, but I loved working with the cadavers. While some of my peers were initially frightened to examine them or got queasy stomachs during class, I felt as though I was accelerating my knowledge in a way that my textbooks never could. I could even eat a burger after class without hesitation! “THIS HECTIC SCHEDULE CAUSES MANY PEOPLE (MYSELF INCLUDED) TO LOSE SIGHT OF WHAT IS TRULY IMPORTANT THIS TIME OF YEAR: GRATITUDE.” While I knew I wanted to be a surgeon, I didn’t know right away what my specialization would be. Because football played such a huge role in my life and genuinely made me the man I am today, I initially planned to complete my residency in orthopedic surgery so I could work closely with athletes. While the idea still intrigues me, I knew that the injuries I would see each day would be too routine to maintain my interest. I needed a specialization that was more artistic and allowed me to be more creative in my work. Then, during my first plastic surgery rotation, something spoke to me. Even though the nature of surgery requires close physical proximity between a doctor and patient, Plastics is multidimensional in its ability to foster deep

surgeon-patient relationships. In order to help a patient achieve their desired look, their doctor needs to actually listen. To this day, I love my job for its authentically personalized nature. I am reminded of the love I have for my practice each time I see a patient. Getting to witness the way a patient’s eyes brighten when they come in for their post-surgery checkup is an indescribable feeling. It’s not just about the beauty aspect. These changes build up patients’ confidence, strengthen their relationships, and alter their overall perspectives in a truly positive way. Getting to be an instrument in that process makes me eternally grateful for the path that God led me on so many years ago. –Dr. Mike

Let’s face it — beauty products are expensive, and their prices continue to skyrocket as celebrities release newmakeup lines each year. Between Rihanna’s 1-ounce bottle of Fenty matte foundation that costs a whopping $40 and Kim Kardashian’s KKW $130 contouring kit, purchasing a fun product or two can quickly eat up your paycheck. These astronomically high numbers leave only a couple options: Forgo the product entirely or bite the bullet and make the most out of the products you do buy. MAKE YOUR BEAUTY PRODUCTS DO DOUBLE DUTY PENNY-PINCHING ALTERNATIVE USES 1. DEODORANT A swipe of deodorant can do much more than keep you smelling lovely; it also prevents blisters. Before you head out for the night in a pair of new shoes, apply some deodorant to the heels of your feet. You’ll come home blister-free. 2. A TOOTHBRUSH If you have an old toothbrush, you can use it to scrub jewels into the sparkling stunners they’re meant to be. Additionally, an old toothbrush also makes a great lip exfoliator. Just get it wet or add a little petroleum jelly and sugar for extra buffing power. HOW DR. BURGDORF GOES THE EXTRA MILE IS A MOMMY MAKEOVER RIGHT FOR YOU? For those of you who prefer the latter option, here are six different beauty products that have interesting but practical alternative uses.

3. SHAVING CREAM Shaving cream can be used to tackle makeup stains. So before you give up on your foundation-stained pillow or your white shirt covered in bronzer, take a can of shaving cream and spray the spot. 4. NAIL POLISH If your shoes paid the price for last weekend’s bachelorette party extravaganza, head straight for the nail polish. Find a color that matches your heels and use it to touch up any scuff marks. 5. AN EYESHADOW BRUSH A clean keyboard is a happy keyboard. But there is no denying the fact that keyboards can get a little grubby. To get to those difficult-to-reach areas, try using an eyeshadow brush. You can use it to dust between keys for a clean workspace. 6. VASELINE Yes, Goo Gone (the traditional product to get rid of gum) is one of the greatest inventions known to man. But it’s often a product that you buy, use once, and can never find again. Next time you’re in a sticky situation, rub Vaseline on the spot. It will remove gum and gunk from your shoes, clothes, and even your hair.

Dr. Burgdorf genuinely wants to help these hardworking mothers feel confident in their strong and beautiful bodies, which have literally brought human beings into the world.

If you have visited our office here at Music City Plastic Surgery in the last three years, you have likely heard of Dr. Burgdorf’s No. 1 Amazon best-selling book, “The Mommy Makeover: Restoring Your Body After Childbirth,” but have you read it for yourself? This book really emphasizes Dr. Burgdorf’s philosophy. A vast majority of his patients are women who have chosen to devote their lives to one of the hardest but best professions in the world: being a mother. In his experience, both personally and professionally, Dr. Burgdorf noticed that moms have a difficult time putting their own needs first. They sacrifice everything for their children: their time, their desires, and their sleep . They also sacrifice their bodies, and those physical sacrifices — pregnancy, breastfeeding, months of getting up in the night — have a price. Many women find that while they truly adore their babies, their bodies have been permanently changed after having children.

And he wrote “The Mommy Makeover” to help them decide if plastic surgery is the right choice. His book dispels some common myths associated with motherhood and plastic surgery. For example, many women assume they won’t be able to breastfeed future babies after having a breast lift, but Dr. Burgdorf explains that an experienced, board-certified plastic surgeon will be able to preserve breast function. By dispelling myths like this one and by helping women decide whether a mommy makeover is right for them, Dr. Burgdorf works to give every patient a comforting experience that is tailored specifically to their desires and expectations. It’s no wonder that patients have dubbed him the “Gentleman Surgeon.” If you haven’t had the opportunity to check out “The Mommy Makeover,” it’s available for purchase on Amazon. Even if you have read the book and just want more information, be sure to subscribe to Music City Plastic Surgery’s YouTube channel, or follow us on Instagram, where you can see Dr. Burgdorf answer commonly asked questions and hear from former patients about their life-changing experiences.

PREPARE YOURSELF FOR THE THANKSGIVING FEAST A COOK’S WORKOUT

When you’re in the kitchen cooking your signature dishes for Thanksgiving dinner, you might find yourself with short periods of nothing to do. While you wait, why not fit in a quick workout? Exercising for 30 minutes will help ease any anxieties you may have — perhaps about getting those side dishes just right, or about your in-laws, who will soon be seated at your table. To start off, you’ll need to warm up. Keeping the oven in sight and the timer well within earshot, take a few minutes to loosen up your muscles. Jog in place, do some jumping jacks for a minute, or jump in place for 45 seconds. Warmups often consist of these basic exercises, but one set of each won’t be enough. To make sure your body is completely warmed up, repeat each set at least three times. After you’ve warmed up, it’s time to start the workout. Squat jumps, ski jumps, pushups, plank crawls, and holding a squat stance are easy exercises you can do in your kitchen, dining room, or living room while your feast cooks. Do each exercise as many times as you can in a minute, and just like you did in the warmup, repeat each set three times.

While in your squat stance, there are several things you can do. For 30-second intervals, put your arms out in a “T” formation and move them up and down in small pulses. Then move your arms out in front of you and return to the “T” shape. Raise your arms up over your head and clap, and then return once more to the “T” formation. Rotate your arms in backward circles, switch to forward arm circles, and finish up by holding your squat for an additional 30 seconds. This 30-minute exercise routine is great for before, during, and after your Thanksgiving meal prep. You don’t have to wait around all day for things to finish up — occupy your downtime with short exercises to keep your heart pumping.
