Act (HTA), drivers on both sides of the road must stop for any school bus with its safety lights and equipment activated and may only proceed once the school bus has deactivated the lights and equipment. This includes multi-lane roads but excludes traffic on the other side of a road with a median. Vehicle owners will be charged and fined if their vehicle illegally passes a stopped
school bus, even if they weren’t driving. The penalty ranges from $400 to $2,000 and six demerit points for a first offence, increasing to $1000 and $4000, six demerit points, and up to six months in jail for repeat offences. Parents are also encouraged to speak with children who walk or bike to school about safety guidelines.
