Sand and gravel pits become focus of all-party committee for province

include sand, gravel, clays, rock, and vari- ous kinds of earth. They are used both in major construction projects and also in some types of agriculture, both outdoor and greenhouse, and in the small-scale home renovation sector. Some aggregate materials are also critical in manufacturing for making glass, coated paper, paint, and some pharmaceuticals, and also necessary for making steel, aluminum, and plastic. Recent studies suggest that Ontario has large supplies of aggregates now, with 80 per cent of the supply located in the south- ern region on either private or Crown land. But increasing population growth com- bined with land-use pressures could see se- rious reduction of the province’s aggregates sources within the next 20 years. The need to develop new sources of aggregates and

expand existing sites also requires balanc- ing the needs of other interest sectors like agriculture and recreation and habitat con- servation. The Ministry of Natural Resources encourages recycling of aggregates when possible. Toronto | In Eastern Ontario much of the mining industry in the region is made up of gravel and sand quarry operations and other similar aggregate extraction busi- nesses. Aggregates are a key part of the construction industry’s needs and the provincial government wants to make sure there is a ready and steady supply for the future. The Standing Committee on General Gov- ernment, an all-party committee of the leg- islature, will review the Aggregate Resourc- es Act and make recommendations on how to strengthen it.
