Monday’s matches were their first opportunity to get out on the field and put their training into use. Both agree that this season’s Wildcats varsity girls team has its main strength in its fullbacks. Advancing through the game schedule for a shot at the regional title and EOSSAA will depend on developing good coordination between the front and back lines. “For our backs to play well, our forwards have to get the ball to them,” Foster said.
ROCKLAND | A pair of shutout matches is a good way to start the rugby season for Rockland District High School’s varsity girls. The Wildcats celebrated Earth Day this month by tearing apart a pair of Ottawa teams in exhibition rugby action April 22. The Monday home tournament finished with RDHS blasting Sir Wilfred Laurier 45-0 and then blitzing Canterbury 25-0. Both Wildcats Coach Bill Foster and team rep Jessica Joubarne noted that the pre- season matches gave the players an oppor- tunity to focus on proper teamwork after the past few weeks of limited indoor drills practice. “As a team we came together a lot better,” Joubarne said. Coach Foster noted that the Wildcats had a shorter amount of prep time available be- fore the start of the regular season because of a combination of poor weather condi- tions and the past labour dispute between the teacher unions and the Education Min- istry that curtailed volunteer support duties
