When we give cheerfully and accept gratefully, everyone is blessed.” –Maya Angelou like spending the workday with your siblings (that is, if you get along with your siblings!). But what makes the environment even better is how supportive everyone is. There is always someone ready to answer a question or help out in any way. When you foster that kind of environment, it’s reflected in the work we do with our clients. The best service comes through when you have a solid team working behind the scenes. Outside of the office, I live a very creative lifestyle. I knit, sew, and paint landscapes. I’ve even sold paintings. I’m the type of person who always needs something to do. I love to stay busy, and when I’m at home, you’ll find me working on all kinds of projects. also sewing a blouse and painting a beautiful, serene forest scene. When I get home from work today, there’s a good chance I’m going to get right back to it! And then, once these projects are done, I’m going to move on to the next. I can’t wait! At the moment, I’m knitting a sweater, which is about halfway complete. I’m

Bonnie Bailey Finds Her Calling

Before I joined the financial services world and Cornerstone Wealth Management Group, I was a full-time mom of two kids. Then, when my son was in high school, I decided it was time for something of a career change. My kids were growing up and I wanted to find something new to focus on day- to-day. But, at the time, I wasn’t sure what the “something new” would be. Around that time, I found myself at a meeting hosted by a financial advisor. He talked about his day, how he helped people with their finances, and how he was able to make a difference in his clients’ lives. That struck a chord with me. I went back to school to get my Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with a focus on financial planning.

Then, last year, I became a licensed Certified Financial Planner, or CFP. Since then, my role at Cornerstone has evolved. I used to work more with our clients, but today, I work more with our advisors. I help them grow and, ultimately, thrive. Part of what I do in working with advisors is deepen their understanding of their own clients’ financial well- being. I give them the tools and resources so they can, in turn, make solid recommendations to their clients and maximize their client-advisor relationship. On top of working primarily with advisors, much of what I do is with Carson Group Partners, a name you may have heard. The group is headed by Ron Carson, whose podcast, “Wealth From Wisdom,” is a regular feature of the Cornerstone newsletter.

When I joined Cornerstone two years ago, I came on as a financial planner.

I can’t say enough good things about Cornerstone — it’s been wonderful working here for the past couple of years. Scott Ford and the team have created an amazing culture here. It’s all one big family. The environment

These Malls Were Made for Walking

The Exercise Venue That Will Keep You Cool and Fit

I f you’re young at heart and looking to stay (or get) in shape this summer, consider taking a trip to the mall. No, not to pick up some hot new exercise product or dietary supplement, but to walk a few laps. Safe and convenient, “mall walking” has become one of the biggest trends in senior fitness. Cool in the Summer, Warm in the Winter This time of year, heatstroke can be a real concern when exercising outside. But that doesn’t mean you have to be a homebody. Because malls are spacious and climate- controlled, they make great year-round walking venues, especially when summer temperatures spike. You don’t even need to put on sunscreen! Rest Stops Abound While the average American shopping center isn’t as scenic as the Appalachian Trail, they are far more convenient. Replete with bathrooms, cool drinking water, and

plenty of benches, the mall lets you focus on exercising and removes all of the “what ifs” that come with aging. Most malls are also outfitted with EMT kits in the event of a medical emergency. Squeeze in Some Shopping It is still a mall, after all. Why not check a few items off your shopping list or reward yourself with a new pair of sneakers? Getting things done as you exercise makes the experience that much more rewarding. Just remember not to overdo it. Carrying too many shopping bags can place undue stress on your back — and your wallet.

You Won’t Be Alone Today, malls are the second-most

popular places to walk in America, after neighborhoods. Mall walking has become so big that many communities and senior living centers have put together official groups to stride together. Your local mall may already open early to accommodate

walkers. So if you’re looking to make friends in an active, fun-loving community, do some research. Chances are there’s a mall-walking club near you!

THE ‘POWER’ IN ESTATE PLANNING 5 Types of Authority You Can Legally Grant Others

As individuals draw up a will or establish a trust, working closely with an attorney can prove invaluable. They can help you with additional estate planning or legal documents necessary to protect your interests, support your objectives, and ensure loved ones have the legal authority to carry out your directives. These can include the following:

This power includes handling financial and business transactions and interests, buying life insurance, settling claims, making gifts, and employing professional help. A general POA is an effective tool if the grantor will be out of the country and needs someone to handle certain matters, or if they become physically or mentally incapable of managing their own affairs. A general POA is often included in an estate plan to make sure someone is appointed to handle financial matters. Durable Power of Attorney This is a general, special, or health care POA that has a durability provision to keep the current POA in effect. Many people execute a durable power of attorney to prepare for the possibility that they may become incapacitated due to illness or injury. The durable POA may specify that it cannot go into effect until a doctor certifies the grantor is incapacitated.

Financial Power of Attorney This POA allows the grantor to appoint an agent to manage financial and legal matters. It can be a general, durable, or special POA, and may be granted for a limited time period or for use under specified circumstances only. Health Care Power of Attorney This POA is a type of advance directive which allows you to name a person to make health care decisions for you when you are unable to do so. In some states, this directive may also be called a durable power of attorney for health care or a health care proxy. Living Will Also called a directive to physicians or advance directive, a living will is a document that lets people state their wishes for end-of-life medical care in the event they become unable to participate in decisions regarding their medical care.

General Power of Attorney (POA) This is the broad power a person or

organization (agent or attorney-in-fact) is granted to act on someone else’s behalf.

Secret Swimming Holes of the World Exclusive Spots You Must See to Believe

Summertime is for swimming, but why settle for a community pool when you can have access to the most beautiful swimming locales in the world? These three exclusive, little-known spots are sure to take your breath away. Hali’i Falls, Hawaii With its spiral staircase of waterfalls, this remote jungle location offers up more than one unique spot to take a plunge. Visitors never fail to be awestruck by the deep blue-green hue of each pool created by the four cascading waterfalls. Hali’i means “to spread out,” which is precisely what each waterfall does, showcasing a serene experience unlike any other. But the beauty of this one-of-a-kind experience is only

outdone by its exclusivity. To reach these pools, you’ll have to hike through dense forest, deep marshes, and wide-open pastures of sugar cane. Dos Ojos, Mexico The Spanish translation of the name for this magical system of caves is “two eyes,” and you’ll want to have yours checked after you see this swimming hole. When limestone bedrock collapses, a sinkhole called a “cenote” is formed. The unearthed water from the natural aquifer balances a color palette of earth tones with the most majestic shades of blue you’ll ever behold. The calling cards for these bodies of water are the Blue Eye and the Black Eye. Both offer unforgettable experiences, but the price

of entry is a hefty sense of adventure. You’ll need a full set of scuba gear to get to either hole. The Baths, Virgin Gorda A day in the Caribbean is like living every moment inside a beautiful pastel painting. The elegance of this location in the British Virgin Islands will make you feel like you’ve been transported into a cathedral. The large boulders and natural rock formations create shallow caves that will captivate your eyes as you wade through the water in wonder. When you exit, you’ll witness the sight that gives this beautiful spot its name: A handful of 40-foot granite boulders form private pools as if that was what they were made for.

How Much Sunshine Is Too Much? KeepYour Family Safe

important to cover all exposed skin with a copious amount of sunscreen. Be sure to reapply every two hours for maximum skin protection. SPEND LESS TIME IN THE SUN If you’re planning to spend a significant amount of time in the sun, consider your environment. Will there be plenty of shade? Will you have to bring your own? What’s the best way to step out of the sun for a few minutes? Wearing sunscreen and protective clothing are great ways to shield yourself from UV rays, but it’s important to avoid being in direct sunlight for long periods. Taking a break from the sun gives your body the time it needs to recuperate and helps prevent sunburn and heatstroke. COMMON MYTHS ABOUT SUN EXPOSURE Many people think that a tan is better than a sunburn, but the result of tanning is still

sun damage. When your skin tone changes due to the sun, regardless of whether it tans or turns red, it’s a result of the epidermis reacting to damage caused by UV rays. Both are symptoms of harmed skin. While vitamin D is important, the sun does not contribute to its creation as much as you might think. Doris Day, a New York City dermatologist, explains that if your skin were to constantly produce vitamin D from being in the sun, it would reach toxic levels. Vitamin D is the only vitamin that your body can produce on its own, through a common form of cholesterol or 7-dehydrocholesterol. Spending time in the sun does help vitamin D form, but you need far less exposure than you think. Knowing how to protect yourself from UV rays is the first step to having a safe, fun-filled summer!

To many people, summer is all about heading outside to enjoy the weather. But getting too much sun can be dangerous. To have a fun-filled summer with your family this year, remember that it’s essential to protect yourself from harmful UV rays. COVER UP Covering your skin is one of the best ways to avoid skin damage. Wide-brimmed hats, long-sleeved shirts, and long pants or skirts can protect your skin from direct exposure to UV rays. While this tactic protects you from the sun, it offers poor defense against the heat. So, if you opt for cooler attire, it’s
