HUDSON | Think you really know and like a person? Nothing tests a friendship like a long, cross-continent road trip, in an unreliable recreational vehicle. The experience can be trying but it can also be revealing and funny. Peggy & Grace, Dunvegan writer Bonnie Laing’s play currently being staged at Hud- son Village Theatre, explores the ups and downs of friendship, and the peaks and val- leys one encounters on the road of life. At last Thursday’s opening, the full-house audience obviously loved Laing’s story about two retired friends who embark on a road trip, discovering North America and themselves. Vivacious Peggy (played by Bronwen Mantel) and cautious Grace (Joanna Noy- es) approach the perils and promise of the open road in very different ways. Peggy is out to paint the town red; Grace wants to stay put and paint the landscapes. Peggy embraces the promise of the open road; Grace recoils from the fear of the unknown. As the recreational vehicle keeps breaking down, their life-long bonds of friendship are also being strained. They are brought closer together, literally and figuratively, when they encounter a dashing young stranger, Sam (Adrien Benn) in the middle of the Ne- vada desert. Tennis, anyone? Champlain Township may be serving up a break to tennis play- ers in the municipality next year. At a recent recreation liaison committee meeting, Councillor Jacques Lacelle said that few people are playing at the L’Orignal courts, adding that he believes fees are the reason for the drop in use. He and Councillor Troy Carkner have suggested that as of 2014, Champlain residents be granted free access to the courts in L’Orignal and Vankleek Hill. Now the rates for a season are $10 for an elementary school pupil, $18 for a high school student, $36 for an adult and $83 for a fam- ily. However, the municipality is proposing to increase fees.
