Several students fromschools in the Glen- garry-Prescott-Russell may be on the road to Waterloo in May after building them- selves a virtual bridge to the provincial technological and trades skills champi- onships. A foursome from Russell High School,

Rockland District High School, and Glen- garry District High School earned their places with gold-medal results at the Eastern Ontario Skilz Competition at St. Lawrence College in Cornwall at the end of Febru- ary. They were among 300 students from across the region competing in one or more

of 16 events ranging from industrial trades to high-end photography. “It’s pretty great,” said Joey Schlapsi, a video engineer. “It’s good to have your hard work pay off. I definitely want tomake films and this is a good start.” The focus of the technology and trades competitions is to give students a chance to display their skills and also interact with other students with similar interests and help determine if this is a career path they would like to pursue as part of their secondary school and post-secondary studies. Chal- lenge events during the event saw student competitors strip down brand-new small engines, test the parts tomake sure theymet industry standards, and then reassemble the engine for later testing to see if it was done right. Other challenge events included crafting a decorative wishing well for use in a home or office display, creating a perfect weld using a simulator, and creating a photo display of the “perfect image of women in the trades”. Earning their spots at the Ontario Techno- logical Skills Competition, May 2 to 4, at RIM Park in Waterloo are: Eric Fillion of Russell High School, in job interview; Joey Schlapsi and Shawn Little of Rockland District High School, in TV/Video; John McLennan of Glengarry District High School, in auto ser- vice technician. “I’m ecstatic,” said Little. Winning themselves a chance at a re- gional qualifier in Kingston on April 16 are: Harley Empey of Rockland District High School in small engines, and Caleb Faithe of Russell High School in individual carpentry. Success there will give them another shot at the provincials in Waterloo the follow- ing month. “It’s my secondmedal that I’ve won,” said Empey. “First time was in improv.”
