Russell Township residents who want to plant a tree or set up a park bench to hon- our a family member may soon be able to get some help from the municipality. The Parks and Recreation Department is developing a policy dealing with com- memorative trees and benches in local parks. The proposed policy would have township staff offer help in choosing a site for either planting a tree or setting up a bench in someone’s honour, com- plete with a marker plaque on the bench or flush to the ground close to the tree. There will be a charge for either the tree or the bench but that will include the cost for staff to plant the tree or set up and maintain the bench. Memorial trees available in Russell

Final budget for Embrun fire hall

The township office “received the keys” to the new Embrun Fire Hall in March. The project is almost complete barring an unexpected extra amount needed in the budget for the hydro connection, Bell comm service hard line, and the communication tower. Local service clubs get their own tradeshow

The signs of spring next year in Russell Township will include the official opening of the first community tradeshow dedi- cated to local service clubs and other vo- lunteer organizations. Council indicated during its May 5 committee of the whole session that it is ready to get behind a proposal from the Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee for a one-day com- munity tradeshow at the Embrun Arena next April. Coun. Pierre Leroux reviewed the concept. The aim is to provide local service clubs and other volunteer groups with an opportunity to promote them- selves and their programs and projects so they attract new members and also help make both longtime residents and newcomers aware of what services they offer. Council directed administration to prepare a formal resolution for approval during the next regular session, which will give township staff authority to start planning work for the project. (GC) Township council took care of one hou- sekeeping item with the animal control fees bylaw. Live-trap rental fees are now a part of the official user fee list. The mu- nicipality’s public safety department has provided live-trap rentals for more than two decades for homeowners trying to deal with some animal pests but the fee for the service was never included in the official policy list. There is no increase planned for the service. Homeowners can still rent a live trap from the municipality for a five-day period for $15. The fee co- vers the purchase and repair cost to the township for the traps. The township is not responsible for dealing with the ani- mal caught in the trap. Traps to rent in Russell Township
