King's Business - 1967-01

Continued from page A9 In reality, it is simply modern man’s determination not to be come involved in anything he doesn’t have to or which will en croach upon his self-arranged patterns of living. It’s the old story of “Am I my brother’s keeper?” And today’s people increasingly say, “No! I don’t give a hang about my broth er. Let him take care of himself.” In a way, I suppose, we can al most expect this from those out side of Christian circles where motivations are selfish and goals focus on me, myself and I. But the tragedy is that we find this moral indifference even among Christian church people who should know better. Where would the human race be, we might ask ourselves, if Jesus Christ had simply said, “ I do not wish to become involved with the desperate plight o f sin ful humanity. I will not bother going to a cross to die for sin ners ?” There is some real food for thought here. For Christianity demands invo lvem en t, involve ment in accordance with the bibli cal ethics of Scripture. THE DAY’S DEMAND God give us men! A time like this demands Strong minds, great hearts, true faith, and ready hands. Men whom the lust of office does not kill; Men whom the spoils of office cannot buy; Men who possess opinions and a will; Men who have honor; men who will not lie; Men who can stand before a demagogue And damn his treacherous flatteries without winking; Tall men, sun-crowned, who live above the fog In public duty and in private thinking; For while they rabble with their thumb- worn creeds, Their large profession and their little deeds Mingle in selfish strife, lo! Freedom weeps, Wrong rules the land, and waiting Justice sleeps. — Josiah G. Holland
