Kick Back & Relax! Find Rel ief for Your Knee & Hip Pain

If you experience hip, knee, or leg pain, it could mean that the complex system of your gait has been effected in some way or another. For more information regarding how our treatments can help you, give us a call today! What causes knee and hip pain? Knee and hip pain occur when the joints and muscles surrounding those areas lack their normal function. If the joint isn’t functioning properly, it can alter one’s mobility, which will increase pressure on the area. This can cause the area to become inflamed, thus resulting in pain. If you are experiencing hip pain, it is likely that there is a problem with your hip joint. When this happens, you will experience pain inside of your hip, or in your groin area. If you are experiencing pain outside of your hip, in your upper thigh, or buttock region, then it is likely that there is a problem with the muscles, tendons, ligaments, or soft tissues surrounding the hip joint. Regardless of where the pain is stemming from, hip pain is typically caused by injury or strain to the joint or surrounding regions; however, the pain can also be due to an underlying disease, such as arthritis. If you are experiencing knee pain, there is a good chance the pain is rooted in your kneecap or patella. Every time you bend your knee, your

kneecap needs enough space to move up and down between your femur bone and the bend of your knee. Unfortunately, if this area becomes inflamed, then the tissues surrounding the kneecap will become tighter, and the kneecap will not have as much space to move. It will try to squeeze through the inflamed padding, causing pain in the knee, and causing the padding to grow thicker and more irritated. When this happens, the joint fluid inside your knee will begin to dry out, resulting in more friction and pain. Physical therapy helps relieve your pain: When relieving knee and hip pain, it is important to make sure that normal motion is restored. Our physical therapists at Nestor Physical Therapy are trained in evaluating your movement to determine the root of your problem, in addition to creating a treatment regimen specific to your pain, and restoring you to your normal mobility and strength. DIY ice packs for when your joints are burning after all that walking: 4 Different Methods 1. (3) parts water to (1) part rubbing alcohol – This combination is recommended by physical therapists, because it is cheap, it stays flexible, and it works perfectly. There is also minimal mess if there is a leak! Win/win. 2. Corn syrup – Yup. Plain old corn syrup. This one is nice because it stays the most soft and flexible compared to the rest; however, if it were to leak, you’d be left with a sticky mess. 3. Liquid dish soap – You guessed it, another one-ingredient ice pack! This one doesn’t stay quite as flexible as the rest, but at least the mess won’t be sticky in the event of a leak.

4. (2) parts liquid dish soap to (1) part rubbing alcohol – This is very similar to the one above but stays a bit more flexible.

To minimize the risk of leaking after repeated uses, make sure to double bag your ice packs in sturdy freezer bags with a double-lock seal. If you have a vacuum bag sealer, this is the perfect use for it.

Patient Success Spotlights

“I was referred to PT for quick onset knee pain and mobility issues. I was in pain when getting in and out of my car and was unable to bend my knee. Dr. Nestor, Josh, and Dave gave me the tools and motivation to make a complete recovery. I am now pain- free and able to walk my dogs, play with my grandchildren and perform all my daily activities. Each session seemed to fly by. I highly recommend Nestor PT for a positive rehab experience.” - Diana Portnoy “I am now pain-free and able to walk my dogs, play with my grandchildren and perform all my daily activities.”

“Initially I could only walk with the assistance of a walker. With physical therapy, I went from using a walker to a cane and am now walking without a cane. I believe physical therapy has improved my quality of life and I will continue to improve, following the guidance that Dr. Nestor & Josh have provided me through the course of my treatment here.” - Joseph Gariepy “I believe physical therapy has improved my quality of life and I will continue to improve...”

Have You Met Your Annual Insurance Deductible?

An insurance deductible is the amount of money that you must pay before your insurance company pays for your medical services. If your deductible is met, your Physical Therapy may not cost you anything. Patients with family plans or those who have had major surgeries or have a chronic illness are especially likely to have a $0 balance remaining on their out-of-pocket expenses. This means that the cost of physical therapy could be minimal or completely covered by the patient’s insurance plan. If you are close to or have met your insurance deductible for the year, then now is the time to come in for Physical Therapy! Are you feeling aches and pains? Need to work on your core? Let us help you get a head start for 2020. Contact us today to schedule your appointment with Nestor Physical Therapy!

Spice-Rubbed Rotisserie Ribs with Pineapple Glaze

This was the recipe in our first newsletter! I re-shot the pictures for our recipe book (coming soon), so I figured I would share this recipe this month. 1. Prepare ribs by removing the membrane of the back of the ribs. Apply your favorite Caribbean rub to the ribs. I make my own. If you have any of the rub I gave away at the clinic, just add some cinnamon, clove, and nutmeg and you have a Caribbean rub.

2. Place the ribs in a large baking dish or large Ziploc bag and let them sit in refrigerator for a few hours or as long as overnight… the longer the better. Remove ribs from refrigerator prior to cooking so they return to room temperature.

3. Set up your gas or charcoal grill for spit roasting (per grill instructions) for medium heat.

4. Use a foil drip pain to prevent fat from dripping into your grill.

5. Cut a hole every 2 or 3 ribs for the spit. Weave the spit through the ribs. It is not as hard as it sounds.

6. Put spit on grill and start motor (see first pic).

7. Fill a clean spray bottle with pineapple juice and spray the ribs as they cook to add additional favor and to keep them from getting dry.

8. Ribs are done when the meat pulls back from the bone about ¼ to ½ inch. About 1-1.5 hours (pic 2).

9. Remove ribs from spit (use heat-proof gloves/oven mitts) since the spit will be hot. The ribs can be sliced into individual ribs and served as an appetizer (pic 3). While the ribs cook you can make your pineapple glaze. 10. In a small saucepan, mix 1.5 cups of pineapple juice and ½ cup of brown sugar. If you like, add 1 cup of spiced rum to the mix. Cook over medium to high heat to reduce the mix (meaning the ingredients will thicken) to create the glaze for drizzling or dipping the ribs. Enjoy!
