ARRIVING EARLY OCTOBER

UNIVERSAL RANGE - AUSTRALIAN SPECIES DEBUT

Havwoods is proud to accounce that we will be releasing two of the most popular Australian species, Blackbutt and Spotted Gum in early October.

Corymbia maculata, commonly known as spotted gum, is species of medium-sized to tall tree that is endemic to eastern Australia. The heartwood ranges from light brown through to dark red-brown hues. Eucalyptus pilularis, commonly known as Blackbutt, is a species of medium-sized to tall tree that is also endemic to eastern Australia. The heartwood ranges from golden yellow to pale brown, although occasionally a slight pinkish colour may be present.

The grain of both these species can be interlocked but it is generally straight, making it appealing for interior use applications such as flooring and joinery.

THE ECO EDITION ENVIRONMENTALLY SUSTAINABLE DESIGN - OR ECO-DESIGN AS IT’S MORE COMMONLY REFERRED TO - IS THE PHILOSOPHY OF DESIGNING PHYSICAL OBJECTS, THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT AND SERVICES TO COMPLY WITH THE PRINCIPLES OF ECOLOGICAL SUSTAINABILITY.

Eco-design differs slightly from green design, which is perhaps a term more often used – it is an easy mistake to interchange the two phrases. Whereas eco-design is a more natural, organic practice from start to finish, green design focuses more upon the use of recycled materials, renewable energies and a reduction of material waste. Therefore, it is more efficient to adopt an environmentally sustainable approach from the very start – and that’s what we aim to do here at Havwoods. In short, wood flooring is one of the few renewable choices of building material for flooring. Other materials are derived from fossil fuels (such as plastic) or take huge amounts of energy to produce (such as concrete). In contrast, wood is a renewable, natural resource which, when managed correctly, can provide an unlimited supply. At Havwoods we look forward to a sustainable, ethical future.

Over recent years, the realisation that many of our human practices are destroying the earth has led to this growing emergence of eco-design, which is increasingly being integrated, into every phase of a potential new product, from conception to completion. In this way, when we consider the environmental impacts throughout all stages of the product development process, we more thoughtfully create eco-design products – those that aim to make the lowest possible environmental impact throughout their lifecycle. According to Greenpeace, human consumption of natural resources has doubled over the last 30 years. Of course, we have good reasons to manufacture better and more efficiently: raw materials and natural resources are finite and, if we do not do better, they will run out.

The brief for Penfolds Bar and Kitchen at Adelaide Airport was to bring the Penfolds Magill Estate experience to airport customers. The warm and welcoming Penfolds Bar and Kitchen is layered with luxurious details creating a physical manifestation of the Penfolds brand. The space is divided into two distinct areas, the Front Bar and the retail Tasting Bar. The Front Bar has ‘Penfolds Grange’ by the glass, Penfolds wine on tap, beer and a butcher block for charcuterie. The Tasting Bar and retail area providing wine tasting and a real cellar door experience. These two areas are linked together beautifully by the feature rope installation flowing like wine over the booth seating along the double height window down over the tasting bar. PENFOLDS ADELAIDE AIRPORT, SA The Penfolds brand is world renowned, therefore the materiality for the design needed to be premium. Havwoods, Aintree engineered timber flooring was specified for its premium finish, hardwearing surface, herringbone pattern plank size, slip rating, herringbone board shape which reduces wastage and its bevelled edge detail. The timber flooring provides an earthy grounding luxurious element to the dining area and tasting table, beautifully framing the space. The herringbone patterned timber floor, sits boldly in the space with its curved corner detailing.

MIDDLE PARK MELBOURNE, VIC

Breadth and light are considered throughout this stunning property in Melbourne’s Middle Park by Zerni Projects. With the home adopting a ‘Light is Life’ mantra with the injection of natural light into as much of the residence as possible, this is further complemented by nature’s beauty of greenery, with 4 areas of natural garden life entering the home and breathing new architectural life into this period marvel. Upon entering the home, between the front of the original house and new addition, an arched steel door provides a transition from heritage to contemporary. Once you have entered through the door, you are greeted by light, symbolising a move away from the home’s period past into a new chapter; a home for the new generation with a nod to the past. Havwoods Ascot herringbone provided a luxe finish to what was a home of monochromatic endeavours. Herringbone Parquetry was selected to add some character and richness into the contemporary home. The juxtaposition between the clean lines of the home, joinery and steel framed windows worked perfectly against the selected flooring.

David from Studio Goss was assigned to create a Showroom to display high-end handmade rugs in a space that was flexible enough to also work for events and collaborations as well as downstairs being mainly used for clients & consultations. Upstairs the brief also incorporated a large space for the clients head office. Aesthetically, they aimed to create a calm and sophisticated space using predominantly natural materials to act as a backdrop to present the product but at the same time make the space uplifting and engaging. Studio Goss selected Havwods Aspen Raw as it had the warmth and consistency they were after in a timber product. They wanted it to look natural but still not have too many knots. The colour was also important, requiring it to be warm and neutral without being too yellow. The timber elements made an enormous difference to the space which was previously a very commercial looking bathroom showroom. The large double height timber joinery to the facade completely transformed the feeling of the space and made the facade much more tactile. The more intimate spaces for product selection in the lower space are also lined in Havwoods timber, bringing a warm contrast to pale grey concrete and render. ARMADILLO & CO. SYDNEY, NSW

PATH TO SUSTAINABILITY

Of course, you always want to deal with reputable timber companies who wouldn’t dream of importing illegally logged timber. Many timber suppliers will tell you, often in good faith, that their supplies are from ‘sustainable’ or ‘managed’ sources, or from plantations. However, without an independent certification system, in practice there is often no way of verifying this, or of demonstrating to your clients that you have met their expectations. The earth’s atmosphere is not the only casualty of deforestation. 70% of the world’s plants and animals live in forests and are loosing their habitats to this destruction. This in turn has an adverse effect on local populations. Trees are also vital to the water cycle and in halting soil erosion. Aiding local populations to gain socially and economically by preserving their forests instead of destroying them, is the task of international non- profit organisations like the Forest Stewardship Council ® (FSC ® ). The FSC’s mission is to promote environmentally appropriate, socially beneficial and economically viable management of the world’s forests, directly or indirectly addressing issues such as illegal logging, deforestation and global warming, and with positive effects on economic development, environmental conservation, poverty alleviation and social and political empowerment.

Look for FSC ® certified products throughout this Wood Book.

Other international organisations you will find referenced in this publication are the PEFC™ (Program of the endorsement of Forest Certification), who concentrate on ensuring that certification is accessible even to small and family owned forests. The Cradle to Cradle Products innovation institute (administrator for the Cradle to Cradle Certified™ Products Program) which addresses issues from a different angle, educating and empowering manufacturers to become a positive force for society and the environment.

Opting to use more wood is undeniably good for both the individual and the environment. Just make sure that the wood you use is the right wood.

MAKING THE GRADE

Since there is no international standard for timber grades, at Havwoods we have established our own, shown here on oak planks. Please do remember that boards are usually selected by eye and that these parameters are simply a guideline.

GENERAL GRADING CRITERIA

SELECT Known as either select or classic grade, typically this will have a mix of almost prime boards with other planks which have more knots. Slightly larger knots are allowed in this grade. Heartwood and colour variation in the timber should be expected and there may be some checks (cracks across the growth ring), sapwood and filler. The colour of the filler is carefully selected to complement the wood rather than to match it exactly and it may vary from batch to batch.

PRIME Typically, prime grade has few, if any knots, and these will be of minimal size. There will also be a minimal amount of sapwood defects and filler, if any at all. Where filler is used its colour is carefully selected to complement the wood rather than to match it exactly, and the colour of the filler may vary from batch to batch. There will be a relatively small amount of colour variation in the timber itself.

RUSTIC Known as either natural or rustic grade this allows a virtually limitless size and number of knots. Heartwood will be used, there will be colour variation, sapwood and filler; you should also expect checks (cracks across the growth ring) and possibly some end shake (cracks between the rings). The colour of the filler is carefully selected to complement the wood rather than to match it exactly and it may vary from batch to batch.

CHARACTER Typically, character grade will include both heartwood and sapwood and allows a wider range of colour variation. Knots are larger and you should expect checks (cracks across the growth ring) and possibly some end shake (cracks between the rings). Filler will be used, the colour of which is carefully selected to complement the wood rather than to match it exactly, and it may vary from batch to batch.

33

CHARACTERISTICS AND TECHNIQUES

SMOKING & FIRING

SINGLE SMOKED

DOUBLE SMOKED

FIRED

Smoking and fuming are essentially the same and refer to a process whereby the lamella timber is exposed to ammonia gas for 24 (single) or 48 (double) hours. The colouration is surface deep only and, unlike staining, a smoked tone will vary from plank to plank. Fired products are treated in a vacuum, sometimes for several weeks, and the dark colour runs throughout the lamella providing a genuine visual alternative to tropical hardwoods.

SAPWOOD & TREATMENT

SMOKED & WHITE OILED

SMOKED

NATURAL OILED

Sapwood is the living part of the tree through which water and sap flow. It is always lighter in colour than the heartwood, and certain fuming, smoking and colouring processes emphasise it since it doesn’t react to these treatments to the same degree. By definition sapwood contains more moisture, however this is no cause for concern since all Havwoods’ timber has been carefully dried and its stability is ensured when supplied in an engineered form.

34

KNOTS & FILLERS

WHITE

GREY

BROWN

BLACK

A knot is either the base of a side branch or a dormant bud around which the grain flows. A knot is sometimes replaced by filler and this may be of various colours: white, grey, brown and black are shown above.

MEDULLARY RAYS, CHECKS & SHAKES

These white, ribbon-like medullary rays are an indication that the plank has been crafted from quarter-sawn timber. Checks and shakes usually occur at the end of a board and may be cut off.

PLEASE NOTE: Product/swatch photography should only be used as a guide to colour and grading. Due to the size of the image together with the printing process and screen resolutions these should not be taken as a true representation of your floor. Natural variations to products will occur in both colour and grading. Samples should only be used as a guide and is not a true representation of the overall floor. We suggest visiting your nearest showroom to see larger samples to obtain a better idea of colour and grading.

35

PATTERNS

There are various different types of designs or patterns available. Standard plank is the most common style but you may decide on something more interesting like a block or herringbone.

PLANK

CHEVRON

This is sometimes known as strip flooring and is available in many different lengths and widths.

Chevron is a V shaped pattern, often inverted and symmetrical.

HERRINGBONE/BLOCK

Solid blocks and larger engineered wood blocks means you can create many different sizes in this pattern. Herringbone blocks may be laid in single or double patterns, or if they are the correct proportion you will be able to produce patterns called ‘Tumbling Dice’, ‘Basket Weave’ and ‘Ladder’ patterns.

UV CURED HARDWAX OIL

This is normally a polyurethane coating that covers the pores of the wood and forms a hard, resilient surface, protecting it from dirt and moisture ingress. A good quality lacquer will protect a wooden floor for anything from 12 months to 6 years, depending upon the amount of foot traffic.

Oil penetrates deep into the wood and brings out the true beauty of both the color and grain, as well as providing protection for the floor. In addition to providing a natural look, oiled floors lend themselves to being spot repaired in the event of surface damage.

37

CARE AND MAINTENANCE (LACQUERED & OILED FLOORS)

PREVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE FOR LACQUERED AND OILED FLOORS

There are precautionary measures you can take to ensure a long-life for your beautiful new wood floor:

Door Mats: Keep a door mat both outside and inside entrance doors, this will remove dirt and gravel before it is walked in, which will greatly reduce the wear on your floor. Ensure you clean the mats regularly to keep them effective at removing dirt and grit. Furniture: Furniture legs should be fitted with felt pads to avoid unnecessary marks and scratches on the floor. Regularly check and clean the felt feet and replace when required. Use castor cups to protect the floor from castor damage. Moisture Protection: Mop up any spills; never allow water or other liquids to lie on the floor. Please ensure that any water that is applied when cleaning becomes dry within one minute.

HW105073 Knock In Felt Feet

HW105067 Sectino Felt Furniture Feet

CLEANING LACQUERED FLOORS Engineered wood flooring prefinished with a lacquer gives it a smooth, easy-to-clean surface. With any wood product it is wise to limit the amount of water that is used and we recommend regular vacuuming to control dust and prevent particles of grit from being walked into the surface. The floor can be cleaned with a well-wrung mop or spray mop system (recommended). Use a neutral detergent, maximum pH 8. Please ensure that any water that is applied becomes dry within one minute. A spillage will not mark your floor if you wipe it up immediately.

REMOVAL OF STAINS ON LACQUERED FLOORS

If you have a stain on the floor, you can try to remove it with a mild detergent (without ammonia) diluted in lukewarm water. Stubborn stains such as ashphalt, rubber, oil, shoe polish, soot, chocolate and grease can be removed by washing naphtha, white spirit, or Turpentine spirit and water (50/50). Crayons, lipstick, Indian Ink, stearin and chewing gum can be removed by freezing with a spray or place a plastic bag with pieces of ice on the stain. Then scrape off carefully. Blood can be simply removed with cold water.

HOW TO LOOK AFTER YOUR LACQUERED FLOOR

An effective maintenance program will keep the floor clean and looking great! The following information is designed to provide a starting point for such a program and is appropriate for both commercial and domestic floors.

Dry Cleaning: Floors should be cleaned daily using dry cleaning methods, such as vacuum or dust control mop, such as a standard anti-static dust mop. Damp Cleaning: Soluble dirt should be removed by cleaning using a spray-mop system such as the Bona Maintenence Kit (P109). Additional Cleaning: Wooden floors can become scratched and dull over time and require reviving. This can be done by preparing the surface and re-applying a ready- to-use solution.

THE LIFE CYCLE OF YOUR LACQUERED AND OILED FLOOR

Periodically it will be necessary to re-finish previously lacquered and oiled floors. Depending on the surface condition, the degree of sanding required will vary and in some circumstances the floor will have to be sanded back to bare wood prior to oil application. Removal of all contaminates is required.

PLEASE NOTE: It is good practice to keep extra boards when your floor is first installed. This allows you to simply replace any damaged boards rather than needing to sand and re-laquere or re-oil the damaged board.

Havwoods’ WoodBook products are sub-divided into collections based upon physical characteristics like size, shape and construction. Most may be used as flooring and cladding, many are also suitable for joinery applications like tables and doors, and all are classified as stock items. If you don’t see precisely what you are looking for, please call 1300 428 966 as our portfolio is vastly more extensive.

HW2002 ASCOT HERRINGBONE, RESIDENTIAL VIC (P44) ZERNI PROJECTS, BROOK JAMES PHOTOGRAPHY

DESIGN FROM HAVWOODS

Our collection of herringbone blocks and Versailles pattern wood flooring. Pre-finished and unfinished blocks can be used to create classic herringbone, basket weave and tumbling dice patterns; or select the ready-made Versailles pattern panels. Click System Herringbones are available in four colours – Aintree, Ascot, Bath and Cheltenham. Simple to lay, the interlocking system is extremely fast to install as a fully bonded floor.

Havwoods recommend a further coat of oil on all natural oiled products after installation. Product and swatch photography should only be used as a guide to colour and grading. Due to the size of the image together with the printing process and screen resolutions these should not be taken as a true representation of your floor. Variations to images will occur in both colour and grading. Please contact us for more information. *Conditions apply for underfloor heating.

Please refer to page 31 for an explanation of Grading Rules. Due to sample sizes, samples cannot be taken as a true and entire representation of the completed floor. IMPORTANT INFORMATION

HENLEY

The Henley collection from Havwoods presents a range of high performance, pre-finished engineered planks with a superior- quality oiled surface. An excellent choice for high footfall installations, or areas that are exposed to heavy-duty use, the textured surface ensures that any superficial scratches and marks are naturally disguised without distracting from the floor’s original aesthetic. Sawing, brushing, burning and planing techniques are applied to the wood in order to add this character, and every product is tested to ensure that these processes have not weakened the plank structure.

NB Packs contain split lengths, with up to 25% shorter boards. These may be half or 1/3 lengths. Havwoods recommend a further coat of oil on all natural oiled products after installation. Product and swatch photography should only be used as a guide to colour and grading. Due to the size of the image together with the printing process and screen resolutions these should not be taken as a true representation of your floor.
