THE INNOVATION EDITION WHEN IT COMES TO DESIGN, INNOVATION IS OFTEN AT THE FOREFRONT – WITH MANY DESIGNERS, ARCHITECTS AND MANUFACTURERS STRIVING TO CREATE SOMETHING NEW AND EXCITING. HOWEVER, THE TREND FOR INNOVATION ISN’T JUST EXCLUSIVE TO THOSE WORKING WITHIN THE INDUSTRY, AS MORE HOMEOWNERS LOOK TO STYLE THEIR HOMES USING FORWARD- THINKING MATERIALS TO CREATE SPACES THAT ARE UNIQUE AND PERSONAL TO THEM.
In recent years there has been an increased awareness around sustainability, consumers are much more aware of the effect of human consumption and therefore are more interested in where their products are coming from. Businesses are having to adapt to meet this demand, often utilising raw materials in an unconventional way, to develop products that are more environmentally and ethically sustainable. Moreover, modern construction methods are constantly evolving and as new, advanced machinery is developed so too does our ability to create custom-made products. For example, enhancements within digital fabrication technology now allow
designers to visualise and create complex three-dimensional forms that were previously unthinkable; presenting endless design possibilities. As homeowners and designers look to create individual spaces, we have seen an emergence of the trend for personalisation. With more consumers now requesting custom-made pieces, there is more space for designers to experiment creatively. When it comes to wood flooring, by simply looking at the raw materials with a fresh outlook and playing around with pattern or layout, truly unique floor coverings can be achieved.
Innovation can also be seen through intelligent solutions that
14
make everyday life more convenient. Intended for commercial application, Havwoods has recently introduced an innovative raised access flooring solution that does just that. Magna Magnetic Flooring provides accessibility to under floor services that cannot be installed within the wall cavities, making it an ideal choice for commercial spaces with an interesting configuration as designers can create schemes unrestricted by the building fabric. Modern advancements across technology and construction methods, alongside a culture shift in relation to social issues surrounding sustainability will continue to have a huge impact on the future of design. We look forward to watching the industry continue to evolve whilst continuing to showcase our own innovative solutions and design expertise. Overleaf Yolande Meyer, our bespoke product buyer will explain how she tracks the latest trends and brings the most exciting products to our expertly curated portfolio.

STAFF SPOTLIGHT: YOLANDE MEYER
Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?
HAVWOODS IS ALWAYS ON THE LOOKOUT TO FIND THE NOT ONLY THE FINEST BUT ALSO THE MOST INTERESTING WOOD FLOORING AND CLADDING PRODUCTS ON THE MARKET. YOLANDE IS OUR SECRET WEAPON, SCOURING THE WORLD FOR NEW AND EXCITING PRODUCTS TO BRING TO THE MARKET. FIND OUT A LITTLE MORE ABOUT OUR BESPOKE PRODUCT BUYER.
I am originally from South Africa and moved to the UK in 2018 with my family. After University, I started my career working in the Fashion Retail industry, holding various positions throughout an 8-year period and ultimately finding my niche in researching trends and facilitating the buying process.
When did you join Havwoods and what is your role?
My journey with Havwoods started just over a year ago. I am currently fulfilling the role of a purchaser in the Bespoke Department and have recently taken on responsibility for New Product Development.
How do you go about discovering new and exciting floor choices, and what is the process?
Social media is your friend, especially in the current climate. People are increasingly using social media to communicate and stay in touch with the outside world. Social media enables you to draw upon ideas from a much wider range of people and this can be particularly enlightening. Sources I like to focus upon include suppliers launching new ideas and trend forecasters, offering their latest design predictions. Trend forecasters and trend forecasting blogs are also very important to follow. These authors spend countless hours analysing the market as well as the latest trends arising from trade shows and the market itself.

16
Why do you feel innovation is important?
Finally, I draw inspiration from our own product ranges. Creating new products that work in harmony with the current offering can open up an even wider market.
Innovation is important for any business. It facilitates growth and allows you to keep up with current trends and allow you to enter new markets. With innovation, it helps you to reinforce your brand in the marketplace. This can often be the main driver of success. You need people to talk about your brand continuously and sub consciously create a demand for your brand. Another aspect of innovation is not to only focus on completely new ideas, but to also focus on your current offering. By adding to, or developing on your current range, you can ensure you build upon your best sellers.
What do you see as the upcoming trends in wood flooring?
I am pleased to mention that wood flooring is in a leading position among the most popular flooring trends for 2021. The main colour trends include: whitewashed, light brown/natural, darker cool shades as well as two tone combinations. From Scandinavian inspirations, light woods will be a trend material for interiors. This wood will be used for flooring but also coverings for walls and ceilings. Taken from the design concept, whitewashed flooring and wider boards will also make their way to the top of the trend list for 2021. Whitewashed flooring has become very popular among interior designers due to the harmony that it creates, it also blends in very well with interior trends such as minimalism. Minimalism continues its rise in popularity and focusses upon the idea that less is more. T exture is another product attribute that deserves a mention. When it comes to texture, the more the better. Choices for textured products are endless but something with hand scraped bevels accompanied by wire-brushing will give a beautiful distressed look. Trendy layouts such as herringbone, chevrons and hexagons are rising in popular floor choices for 2021. Lastly, one concept that really stands out is combining two flooring materials into one area. Think about mediums such as wood and ceramic tiles – this is popular in studio type living spaces where one area flows into another. One such example that is very popular is hexagon ceramics mixed with hexagon wooden tiles.
Do you think the requirement for more sustainable flooring is increasing?
Definitely. We, as consumers, are becoming more and more aware of our surroundings and our footprint on the planet. A big emphasis has been placed on global warming and how our current consumer trends are affecting the wellbeing of the planet. People are starting to take notice and realise that the power lies within us to change the future of our planet by making better consumer choices. These choices start from saying no to a plastic straw to demanding flooring from sustainable forests.
What is your favourite upcoming concept and why does it appeal?
The Foresso range is stunning. It not only covers some major trends such as mixing two mediums together, but it is also available in vibrant colourways. From the flooring to the packaging, it is all very eco driven and proudly manufactured in Britain.

Svelte and sophisticated
Traditional herringbone flooring is probably the most common form of parquetry, with rectangular blocks forming the distinctive pattern. We have taken this one step further by elongating the individual block giving a svelte slimline shape that accentuates the scale of the pattern and visually expands the size of the room.

BEACHSIDE BLISS PALM BEACH, NSW Amazon wide plank was used in this beach-side residence to compliment the neutral tones throughout all the spaces. Custom Constructions worked with the owner to turn an old disjointed beach shack into a simple, clean open space that took advantage of the amazing oceanfront position. The use of minimalistic design ques brings the floor to the forefront and flows through to several other picturesque spaces. As the floor was going throughout the entire home, it needed to meet the relaxed, modern beach home aesthetic which Amazon did perfectly. The 6mm Oak top layer combined with the birch plywood backing helped make the decision to choose a Havwoods floor easier. Sam from Custom Contruction said “We loved the 260mm profile and the natural finish of the Amazon wide plank. The quality of the board was also a deciding factor as we have had problems with other complanies engineered boards from in the past. Havwoods were great to work with – always communicating with us throughout the project from choosing our board, lead times and distribution, and following up to see how the installation went”.

SOHOOFFICE LONDON, UK
Located in London’s thriving media capital, 35 Soho Square is a stunning period building and home to The Boutique Workplace Company. Many of the rooms within this grand space include high ceilings, floor-length windows and period features such as fireplaces. The refurbishment saw the reception area relocated to the front of the building, so that it had the opportunity to make a real statement and give visitors a fantastic first impression and true ‘wow’ experience. The design brief was to create a neutral background with floorboards from the Havwoods collection. Bronzo plank frpm The Italian collection was carefully selected as being the perfect option to showcase the beautiful furniture in all its glory, along with accentuating the lighting, artwork and unique joinery pieces. In addition, the wood flooring allowed the designer to play with the scale of the traditional square pattern parquet – the Italian boards were the ideal product to achieve this look with, and the rich tones of the floor work perfectly within the design. Now, the space offers a striking and contemporary reception area with eye-catching furniture pieces, neon lighting and, of course, dramatic patterned wood flooring from Havwoods to complete the look.

GLOVER STREET MOSMAN, NSW
This project involved the renovation of a small freestanding home in Sydney’s Mosman.
Following approval of their Development Application our client sought assistance with specification of finishes for internal and external renovations, review of existing joinery plans, design of an outdoor kitchen and BBQ area and guidance on landscaping and overall aesthetic. As our client was based overseas we co-ordinated the selection of builder and trades , managed the tender process and oversaw delivery of the completed project. The specifications for this job included flooring, lighting, joinery materials and colours. The warm, mid-grey tones provided the elegant feel we were seeking for this period home – but without being too traditional or too dark for this home which has limited natural light. Oak Fendi was selected as the flooring for this home as it provided the warmth and elegance we were wanting to re- instate into this period home. Havwoods service has always been exceptional and having used Havwoods flooring on many other jobs we were confident in the quality. Fendi provides the perfect balance of warmth and elegance.

PATH TO SUSTAINABILITY
Of course, you always want to deal with reputable timber companies who wouldn’t dream of importing illegally logged timber. Many timber suppliers will tell you, often in good faith, that their supplies are from ‘sustainable’ or ‘managed’ sources, or from plantations. However, without an independent certification system, in practice there is often no way of verifying this, or of demonstrating to your clients that you have met their expectations. The earth’s atmosphere is not the only casualty of deforestation. 70% of the world’s plants and animals live in forests and are loosing their habitats to this destruction. This in turn has an adverse effect on local populations. Trees are also vital to the water cycle and in halting soil erosion. Aiding local populations to gain socially and economically by preserving their forests instead of destroying them, is the task of international non- profit organisations like the Forest Stewardship Council ® (FSC ® ). The FSC’s mission is to promote environmentally appropriate, socially beneficial and economically viable management of the world’s forests, directly or indirectly addressing issues such as illegal logging, deforestation and global warming, and with positive effects on economic development, environmental conservation, poverty alleviation and social and political empowerment.
Look for FSC ® certified products throughout this Wood Book.
Other international organisations you will find referenced in this publication are the PEFC™ (Program of the endorsement of Forest Certification), who concentrate on ensuring that certification is accessible even to small and family owned forests. The Cradle to Cradle Products innovation institute (administrator for the Cradle to Cradle Certified™ Products Program) which addresses issues from a different angle, educating and empowering manufacturers to become a positive force for society and the environment.
Opting to use more wood is undeniably good for both the individual and the environment. Just make sure that the wood you use is the right wood.

MAKING THE GRADE
Since there is no international standard for timber grades, at Havwoods we have established our own, shown here on oak planks. Please do remember that boards are usually selected by eye and that these parameters are simply a guideline.
GENERAL GRADING CRITERIA
SELECT Known as either select or classic grade, typically this will have a mix of almost prime boards with other planks which have more knots. Slightly larger knots are allowed in this grade. Heartwood and colour variation in the timber should be expected and there may be some checks (cracks across the growth ring), sapwood and filler. The colour of the filler is carefully selected to complement the wood rather than to match it exactly and it may vary from batch to batch.
PRIME Typically, prime grade has few, if any knots, and these will be of minimal size. There will also be a minimal amount of sapwood defects and filler, if any at all. Where filler is used its colour is carefully selected to complement the wood rather than to match it exactly, and the colour of the filler may vary from batch to batch. There will be a relatively small amount of colour variation in the timber itself.
RUSTIC Known as either natural or rustic grade this allows a virtually limitless size and number of knots. Heartwood will be used, there will be colour variation, sapwood and filler; you should also expect checks (cracks across the growth ring) and possibly some end shake (cracks between the rings). The colour of the filler is carefully selected to complement the wood rather than to match it exactly and it may vary from batch to batch.
CHARACTER Typically, character grade will include both heartwood and sapwood and allows a wider range of colour variation. Knots are larger and you should expect checks (cracks across the growth ring) and possibly some end shake (cracks between the rings). Filler will be used, the colour of which is carefully selected to complement the wood rather than to match it exactly, and it may vary from batch to batch.

CHARACTERISTICS AND TECHNIQUES
SMOKING & FIRING
SINGLE SMOKED
DOUBLE SMOKED
FIRED
Smoking and fuming are essentially the same and refer to a process whereby the lamella timber is exposed to ammonia gas for 24 (single) or 48 (double) hours. The colouration is surface deep only and, unlike staining, a smoked tone will vary from plank to plank. Fired products are treated in a vacuum, sometimes for several weeks, and the dark colour runs throughout the lamella providing a genuine visual alternative to tropical hardwoods.
SAPWOOD & TREATMENT
SMOKED & WHITE OILED
SMOKED
NATURAL OILED
Sapwood is the living part of the tree through which water and sap flow. It is always lighter in colour than the heartwood, and certain fuming, smoking and colouring processes emphasise it since it doesn’t react to these treatments to the same degree. By definition sapwood contains more moisture, however this is no cause for concern since all Havwoods’ timber has been carefully dried and its stability is ensured when supplied in an engineered form.
44
KNOTS & FILLERS
WHITE
GREY
BROWN
BLACK
A knot is either the base of a side branch or a dormant bud around which the grain flows. A knot is sometimes replaced by filler and this may be of various colours: white, grey, brown and black are shown above.
MEDULLARY RAYS, CHECKS & SHAKES
These white, ribbon-like medullary rays are an indication that the plank has been crafted from quarter-sawn timber. Checks and shakes usually occur at the end of a board and may be cut off.
PLEASE NOTE: Product/swatch photography should only be used as a guide to colour and grading. Due to the size of the image together with the printing process and screen resolutions these should not be taken as a true representation of your floor. Natural variations to products will occur in both colour and grading. Samples should only be used as a guide and is not a true representation of the overall floor. We suggest visiting your nearest showroom to see larger samples to obtain a better idea of colour and grading.
45
PATTERNS
There are various different types of designs or patterns available. Standard plank is the most common style but you may decide on something more interesting like a block or herringbone.
PLANK
CHEVRON
This is sometimes known as strip flooring and is available in many different lengths and widths.
Chevron is a V shaped pattern, often inverted and symmetrical.
HERRINGBONE/BLOCK
Solid blocks and larger engineered wood blocks means you can create many different sizes in this pattern. Herringbone blocks may be laid in single or double patterns, or if they are the correct proportion you will be able to produce patterns called ‘Tumbling Dice’, ‘Basket Weave’ and ‘Ladder’ patterns.

UV CURED HARDWAX OIL
This is normally a polyurethane coating that covers the pores of the wood and forms a hard, resilient surface, protecting it from dirt and moisture ingress. A good quality lacquer will protect a wooden floor for anything from 12 months to 6 years, depending upon the amount of foot traffic.
Oil penetrates deep into the wood and brings out the true beauty of both the color and grain, as well as providing protection for the floor. In addition to providing a natural look, oiled floors lend themselves to being spot repaired in the event of surface damage.

CARE AND MAINTENANCE (LACQUERED & OILED FLOORS)
PREVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE FOR LACQUERED AND OILED FLOORS
There are precautionary measures you can take to ensure a long-life for your beautiful new wood floor:
Door Mats: Keep a door mat both outside and inside entrance doors, this will remove dirt and gravel before it is walked in, which will greatly reduce the wear on your floor. Ensure you clean the mats regularly to keep them effective at removing dirt and grit. Furniture: Furniture legs should be fitted with felt pads to avoid unnecessary marks and scratches on the floor. Regularly check and clean the felt feet and replace when required. Use castor cups to protect the floor from castor damage. Moisture Protection: Mop up any spills; never allow water or other liquids to lie on the floor. Please ensure that any water that is applied when cleaning becomes dry within one minute.

CLEANING LACQUERED FLOORS Engineered wood flooring prefinished with a lacquer gives it a smooth, easy-to-clean surface. With any wood product it is wise to limit the amount of water that is used and we recommend regular vacuuming to control dust and prevent particles of grit from being walked into the surface. The floor can be cleaned with a well-wrung mop or spray mop system (recommended). Use a neutral detergent, maximum pH 8. Please ensure that any water that is applied becomes dry within one minute. A spillage will not mark your floor if you wipe it up immediately.
REMOVAL OF STAINS ON LACQUERED FLOORS
If you have a stain on the floor, you can try to remove it with a mild detergent (without ammonia) diluted in lukewarm water. Stubborn stains such as ashphalt, rubber, oil, shoe polish, soot, chocolate and grease can be removed by washing naphtha, white spirit, or Turpentine spirit and water (50/50). Crayons, lipstick, Indian Ink, stearin and chewing gum can be removed by freezing with a spray or place a plastic bag with pieces of ice on the stain. Then scrape off carefully. Blood can be simply removed with cold water.
HOW TO LOOK AFTER YOUR LACQUERED FLOOR
An effective maintenance program will keep the floor clean and looking great! The following information is designed to provide a starting point for such a program and is appropriate for both commercial and domestic floors.
Dry Cleaning: Floors should be cleaned daily using dry cleaning methods, such as vacuum or dust control mop, such as a standard anti-static dust mop. Damp Cleaning: Soluble dirt should be removed by cleaning using a spray-mop system such as the Bona Maintenence Kit (P121). Additional Cleaning: Wooden floors can become scratched and dull over time and require reviving. This can be done by preparing the surface and re-applying a ready- to-use solution.

CLEANING OILED FLOORS Engineered wood flooring prefinished with a oil gives it a smooth, easy-to-clean surface. With any wood product it is wise to limit the amount of water that is used and we recommend regular vacuuming to control dust and prevent particles of grit from being walked into the surface. Periodically the floor can be cleaned with a well-wrung mop or spray mop system (recommended). Use a neutral detergent, maximum pH 8. Please ensure that any water that is applied becomes dry within one minute. A spillage will not mark your floor if you wipe it up immediately.
HOW TO LOOK AFTER YOUR OILED FLOOR
An effective maintenance program will keep the floor clean and looking great! The following information is designed to provide a starting point for such a program and is appropriate for both commercial and domestic floors.
Dry Cleaning: Floors should be cleaned daily using dry cleaning methods, such as vacuum or dust control mop, such as a standard anti- static dust mop. Damp Cleaning: Soluble dirt should be removed by cleaning using a mop system such as the Osmo Telescopic Handle with the Osmo Optiset Microfibre Cleaning Kit (P120). Additional Cleaning: Wooden floors can become scratched and dull over time and require reviving. This can be done by preparing the surface and re-applying a ready-to-use solution.

THE LIFE CYCLE OF YOUR LACQUERED AND OILED FLOOR
Periodically it will be necessary to re-finish previously lacquered and oiled floors. Depending on the surface condition, the degree of sanding required will vary and in some circumstances the floor will have to be sanded back to bare wood prior to oil application. Removal of all contaminates is required.
PLEASE NOTE: It is good practice to keep extra boards when your floor is first installed. This allows you to simply replace any damaged boards rather than needing to sand and re-laquere or re-oil the damaged board.

AUSTRALIAN RANGE
AUSTRALIAN SPECIES SUCCESSFUL LAUNCH Havwoods is proud to announce that we have released two of the most popular Australian species, Blackbutt and Spotted Gum in early October to much fanfare. Corymbia maculata, commonly known as spotted gum, is species of medium-sized to tall tree that is endemic to eastern Australia. The heartwood ranges from light brown through to dark red-brown hues. Eucalyptus pilularis, commonly known as Blackbutt, is a species of medium-sized to tall tree that is also endemic to eastern Australia. The heartwood ranges from golden yellow to pale brown, although occasionally a slight pinkish colour may be present. The grain of both these species can be interlocked but it is generally straight, making it appealing for interior use applications such as flooring and joinery.
