Timber has always offered a sustainable solution for interior design and construction, but what if you took the waste from others and created something truly unique and equally exquisite. Shards of discarded timber are expertly and consistently set into a 0% VOC resin binder to form this one of a kind material. Made in Britain and utilising a minimum of 65% waste material, timber terrazzo brings an amazing new take on wood flooring choices. Available in both plank and tile format, these pre- finished products are easy to install and can be adjusted on site like any other wood flooring product. Excited as we are? Give us a call to discuss how this unique product could be incorporated into your design. Ever wondered what the limits are for engineered wood flooring? Well at Havwoods, there are no limits. Take a look at these colossal boards, dimensions up to 60cm wide and up to a mammoth 14m in length, these truly are breath-taking. Sawn from the entire length of a tree trunk, these truly spectacular planks can offer wall to wall flooring with no end joints. The 4mm top layer of European Oak is secured to a 9/12mm core with a further 4mm balancing layer beneath. Sometimes size is everything Timber terrazzo by foresso ®

16

Svelte and sophisticated

Traditional herringbone flooring is probably the most common form of parquetry, with rectangular blocks forming the distinctive pattern. We have taken this one step further by elongating the individual block giving a svelte slimline shape that accentuates the scale of the pattern and visually expands the size of the room.

The abundant beauty of Douglas Fir

This evergreen conifer is one the most abundant and hard wearing softwoods found. It’s natural beauty is emphasised during a time-worn process which draws out the colour in the grain offering a truly stunning Scandinavian style flooring option.

The forêt collection

The Forêt Collection by OSCARONO is a wooden surface that takes the endless and enduring beauty of end grain and brings it to life in a showcase of geometric wonder. Each board comes completely preassembled in a handmade simple to install tongue & groove plank format. With 6 different patterns and 3 different finishes, Forêt really is a playground for architects, designers who can create their own unique flooring masterpiece.

Beautiful work needs to be shared. In this section of the Wood Book we are proud to showcase some of our latest installations from around the world to truly inspire you.

19

Your Beautiul Home proposed the idea to use Pallido Herringbone to give the apartment in North Steyne a sense of quality and difference. The client loved the idea that the herringbone pattern would lift above the standard plank look. They chose Pallido because they were after a costal feel for this apartment as it is right on the ocean so they needed something that felt very fresh and very light. A SPRAY OF OCEAN NORTH STEYNE, NSW

Anna from Your Beautiful Home said:

“Being in a apartment building we were limited with the amount of windows down the side so you can tend to get darker areas. Pallido gives you that beautiful, fresh, open feeling. When done in the herringbone though, it gives that sense of sohistication and a bit of a wow factor when you walk in. It was excellent working with Havwoods because we were able to match the herringbone floor and the plank for the staircase. They blend together seamlessley and looks beautiful”.

BLANCO NEWYORK, USA This container home is the very creative product of MB Architecture, who were tasked by clients to explore means of building a house for their summer and year-round-weekend use. The clients were open to exploring materials, methods of construction, and design strategies that would yield both affordable and exciting solutions. The end result is a unique 1,800 sqf. home complete with Havwoods HW3622 Blanco wood flooring. Simplicity of spatial layout and materials were sought to yield compelling and uncluttered rooms while achieving budget goals. So, the rectilinear geometry of containers, and their inherent structural strengths, were used to guide room layout and structural requirements. The single container, housing two bedrooms, is placed slightly away from the main building to create courtyard-like outdoor spaces that allow the building to nestle into the sloping landscape, while making the small house feel spacious.

Nestled between an established row of modern beachside dwellings, the design for 8 Berner Street has been crafted through a relentless pursuit to reconcile competing ideals - prospect and refuge, public and private. This property uses robust materials such as off- form concrete and natural hardwood not only for their durability to withstand the harsh coastal environment but also because if reflects the materials used in the adjacent buildings, coastal walkways and landscaping. The clients wanted a simple palette of materials and colours, which would in turn generate a design scheme that echoed integrity, honesty and abundance. As a result, Havwoods Amendo plank was chosen due to its strength, warmth, natural colour and flexibility. The choice of flooring complements the design scheme of the property, which seeks to reflect the coastal landscape while providing durability. The soft colouring yet high strength of Amendo works perfectly with the material pallet for the rest of the house. BERNER STREET DIXON PARK, NSW

Path to Sustainability Making the Grade

Solid vs Engineered Timber Characteristics and Techniques

Patterns & Finishes Care & Maintenance

Using more wood is good for your buildings and your planet – every cubic metre of wood used as a substitute for other building materials reduces CO 2 emissions by, on average, 1.1 tonnes. You can also find out all you need to know about the processes used in production and our grading criteria.

27

PATH TO SUSTAINABILITY

Of course, you always want to deal with reputable timber companies who wouldn’t dream of importing illegally logged timber. Many timber suppliers will tell you, often in good faith, that their supplies are from ‘sustainable’ or ‘managed’ sources, or from plantations. However, without an independent certification system, in practice there is often no way of verifying this, or of demonstrating to your clients that you have met their expectations. The earth’s atmosphere is not the only casualty of deforestation. 70% of the world’s plants and animals live in forests and are loosing their habitats to this destruction. This in turn has an adverse effect on local populations. Trees are also vital to the water cycle and in halting soil erosion. Aiding local populations to gain socially and economically by preserving their forests instead of destroying them, is the task of international non-profit organisations like the Forest Stewardship Council ® (FSC ® ). The FSC’s mission is to promote environmentally appropriate, socially beneficial and economically viable management of the world’s forests, directly or indirectly addressing issues such as illegal logging, deforestation and global warming, and with positive effects on economic development, environmental conservation, poverty alleviation and social and political empowerment.

Look for FSC ® certified products throughout this Wood Book.

Other international organisations you will find referenced in this publication are the PEFC™ (Program of the endorsement of Forest Certification), who concentrate on ensuring that certification is accessible even to small and family owned forests. The Cradle to Cradle Products innovation institute (administrator for the Cradle to Cradle Certified™ Products Program) which addresses issues from a different angle, educating and empowering manufacturers to become a positive force for society and the environment. Opting to use more wood is undeniably good for both the individual and the environment. Just make sure that the wood you use is the right wood.

MAKING THE GRADE

Since there is no international standard for timber grades, at Havwoods we have established our own, shown here on oak planks. Please do remember that boards are usually selected by eye and that these parameters are simply a guideline.

GENERAL GRADING CRITERIA

SELECT Known as either select or classic grade, typically this will have a mix of almost prime boards with other planks which have more knots. Slightly larger knots are allowed in this grade. Heartwood and colour variation in the timber should be expected and there may be some checks (cracks across the growth ring), sapwood and filler. The colour of the filler is carefully selected to complement the wood rather than to match it exactly and it may vary from batch to batch.

PRIME Typically, prime grade has few, if any knots, and these will be of minimal size. There will also be a minimal amount of sapwood defects and filler, if any at all. Where filler is used its colour is carefully selected to complement the wood rather than to match it exactly, and the colour of the filler may vary from batch to batch. There will be a relatively small amount of colour variation in the timber itself.

RUSTIC Known as either natural or rustic grade this allows a virtually limitless size and number of knots. Heartwood will be used, there will be colour variation, sapwood and filler; you should also expect checks (cracks across the growth ring) and possibly some end shake (cracks between the rings). The colour of the filler is carefully selected to complement the wood rather than to match it exactly and it may vary from batch to batch.

CHARACTER Typically, character grade will include both heartwood and sapwood and allows a wider range of colour variation. Knots are larger and you should expect checks (cracks across the growth ring) and possibly some end shake (cracks between the rings). Filler will be used, the colour of which is carefully selected to complement the wood rather than to match it exactly, and it may vary from batch to batch.

CHARACTERISTICS AND TECHNIQUES

SMOKING & FIRING

SINGLE SMOKED

DOUBLE SMOKED FIRED

Smoking and fuming are essentially the same and refer to a process whereby the lamella timber is exposed to ammonia gas for 24 (single) or 48 (double) hours. The colouration is surface deep only and, unlike staining, a smoked tone will vary from plank to plank. Fired products are treated in a vacuum, sometimes for several weeks, and the dark colour runs throughout the lamella providing a genuine visual alternative to tropical hardwoods.

SAPWOOD & TREATMENT

NATURAL OILED

SMOKED AND WHITE OILED

SMOKED

Sapwood is the living part of the tree through which water and sap flow. It is always lighter in colour than the heartwood, and certain fuming, smoking and colouring processes emphasise it since it doesn’t react to these treatments to the same degree. By definition sapwood contains more moisture, however this is no cause for concern since all Havwoods’ timber has been carefully dried and its stability is ensured when supplied in an engineered form.

KNOTS & FILLERS

WHITE

GREY

BROWN

BLACK

A knot is either the base of a side branch or a dormant bud around which the grain flows. A knot is sometimes replaced by filler and this may be of various colours: white, grey, brown and black are shown above.

MEDULLARY RAYS, CHECKS & SHAKES

These white, ribbon-like medullary rays are an indication that the plank has been crafted from quarter-sawn timber. Checks and shakes usually occur at the end of a board and may be cut off.

PLEASE NOTE: Product/swatch photography should only be used as a guide to colour and grading. Due to the size of the image together with the printing process and screen resolutions these should not be taken as a true representation of your floor. Natural variations to products will occur in both colour and grading. Samples should only be used as a guide and is not a true representation of the overall floor. We suggest visiting your nearest showroom to see larger samples to obtain a better idea of colour and grading.

PATTERNS

There are various different types of designs or patterns available. Standard plank is the most common style but you may decide on something more interesting like a block or herringbone.

PLANK

CHEVRON

This is sometimes known as strip flooring and is available in many different lengths and widths.

Chevron is a V shaped pattern, often inverted and symmetrical.

HERRINGBONE/BLOCK

Solid blocks and larger engineered wood blocks means you can create many different sizes in this pattern. Herringbone blocks may be laid in single or double patterns, or if they are the correct proportion you will be able to produce patterns called ‘Tumbling Dice’, ‘Basket Weave’ and ‘Ladder’ patterns.

UV CURED HARDWAX OIL

This is normally a polyurethane coating that covers the pores of the wood and forms a hard, resilient surface, protecting it from dirt and moisture ingress. A good quality lacquer will protect a wooden floor for anything from 12 months to 6 years, depending upon the amount of foot traffic.

Oil penetrates deep into the wood and brings out the true beauty of both the color and grain, as well as providing protection for the floor. In addition to providing a natural look, oiled floors lend themselves to being spot repaired in the event of surface damage.

CARE AND MAINTENANCE (LACQUERED & OILED FLOORS)

PREVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE FOR LACQUERED AND OILED FLOORS

There are precautionary measures you can take to ensure a long-life for your beautiful new wood floor:

Door Mats: Keep a door mat both outside and inside entrance doors, this will remove dirt and gravel before it is walked in, which will greatly reduce the wear on your floor. Ensure you clean the mats regularly to keep them effective at removing dirt and grit. Furniture: Furniture legs should be fitted with felt pads to avoid unnecessary marks and scratches on the floor. Regularly check and clean the felt feet and replace when required. Use castor cups to protect the floor from castor damage. Moisture Protection: Mop up any spills; never allow water or other liquids to lie on the floor. Please ensure that any water that is applied when cleaning becomes dry within one minute.

HW105073 Knock In Felt Feet

HW105067 Sectino Felt Furniture Feet

CLEANING LACQUERED FLOORS Engineered wood flooring prefinished with a lacquer gives it a smooth, easy-to-clean surface. With any wood product it is wise to limit the amount of water that is used and we recommend regular vacuuming to control dust and prevent particles of grit from being walked into the surface. The floor can be cleaned with a well-wrung mop or spray mop system (recommended). Use a neutral detergent, maximum pH 8. Please ensure that any water that is applied becomes dry within one minute. A spillage will not mark your floor if you wipe it up immediately.

REMOVAL OF STAINS ON LACQUERED FLOORS

If you have a stain on the floor, you can try to remove it with a mild detergent (without ammonia) diluted in lukewarm water. Stubborn stains such as ashphalt, rubber, oil, shoe polish, soot, chocolate and grease can be removed by washing naphtha, white spirit, or Turpentine spirit and water (50/50). Crayons, lipstick, Indian Ink, stearin and chewing gum can be removed by freezing with a spray or place a plastic bag with pieces of ice on the stain. Then scrape off carefully. Blood can be simply removed with cold water.

HOW TO LOOK AFTER YOUR LACQUERED FLOOR

An effective maintenance program will keep the floor clean and looking great! The following information is designed to provide a starting point for such a program and is appropriate for both commercial and domestic floors.

Dry Cleaning: Floors should be cleaned daily using dry cleaning methods, such as vacuum or dust control mop, such as a standard anti-static dust mop. Damp Cleaning: Soluble dirt should be removed by cleaning using a spray-mop system such as the Bona Maintenence Kit (P105). Additional Cleaning: Wooden floors can become scratched and dull over time and require reviving. This can be done by preparing the surface and re-applying a ready-to-use solution.

This can be done by preparing the surface and re-applying a ready-to-use solution. THE LIFE CYCLE OF YOUR LACQUERED AND OILED FLOOR Periodically it will be necessary to re-finish previously lacquered and oiled floors. Depending on the surface condition, the degree of sanding required will vary and in some circumstances the floor will have to be sanded back to bare wood prior to oil application. Removal of all contaminates is required. PLEASE NOTE: It is good practice to keep extra boards when your floor is first installed. This allows you to simply replace any damaged boards rather than needing to sand and relacquer or re-oil the damaged board. Engineered wood flooring prefinished with a oil gives it a smooth, easy-to-clean surface. With any wood product it is wise to limit the amount of water that is used and we recommend regular vacuuming to control dust and prevent particles of grit from being walked into the surface. AUSTRALIAN RANGE

Havwoods is proud to announce that we have released two of the most popular Australian species, Blackbutt and Spotted Gum in early October to much fanfare. Corymbia maculata, commonly known as spotted gum, is species of medium-sized to tall tree that is endemic to eastern Australia. The heartwood ranges from light brown through to dark red-brown hues. Eucalyptus pilularis, commonly known as Blackbutt, is a species of medium-sized to tall tree that is also endemic to eastern Australia. The heartwood ranges from golden yellow to pale brown, although occasionally a slight pinkish colour may be present. The grain of both these species can be interlocked but it is generally straight, making it appealing for interior use applications such as flooring and joinery.

HW2000 AINTREE HERRINGBONE (P46), PENFOLDS BAR, SA

DESIGN FROM HAVWOODS

Our collection of herringbone blocks and Versailles pattern wood flooring. Pre- finished and unfinished blocks can be used to create classic herringbone, basket weave and tumbling dice patterns; or select the ready-made Versailles pattern panels. Click System Herringbones are available in four colours – Aintree, Ascot, Bath and Cheltenham. Simple to lay, the interlocking system is extremely fast to install as a fully bonded floor.

Havwoods recommend a further coat of oil on all natural oiled products after installation. Product and swatch photography should only be used as a guide to colour and grading. Due to the size of the image together with the printing process and screen resolutions these should not be taken as a true representation of your floor. Variations to images will occur in both colour and grading. Please contact us for more information. *Conditions apply for underfloor heating.

Please refer to page 29 for an explanation of Grading Rules. Due to sample sizes, samples cannot be taken as a true and entire representation of the completed floor. IMPORTANT INFORMATION

HENLEY

The Henley collection from Havwoods presents a range of high performance, pre- finished engineered planks with a superior- quality oiled surface. An excellent choice for high footfall installations, the textured surface ensures that any superficial scratches and marks are naturally disguised without distracting from the floor’s original aesthetic. Sawing, brushing, burning and planing techniques are applied to the wood in order to add this character, and every product is tested to ensure that these processes have not weakened the plank structure.

NB Packs contain split lengths, with up to 25% shorter boards. These may be half or 1/3 lengths. Please enquire for more information. *Conditions apply for underfloor heating.
