Alfred-Plantagenet works on sports dome project

GREGG CHAMBERLAIN gregg.chamberlain@eap.on.ca

Alfred-Plantagenet Township is trying to beef up its community recreation facilities and right now a sports dome seems like a good idea. Right now the idea of a community sports dome is in the preliminary stage. Recreation Director Ken St-Denis explained during a phone interview Jan. 28 that he has been in contact since August last year with officials of le Conseil scolaire de district catholique de l’Est ontarien (CSDCEO) and for Soccer Pro17 on exploring a possible partnership arrangement for a community sports dome. St-Denis presented a report on the status of the proposal to township council during its Jan. 27 committee of the whole session. «We want to have a mandate for a partnership,» St-Denis said, adding that he and his staff would then be able to start wor- king with officials for the other groups on possible options for designing and financing the project. «We want to make sure eve- rybody is sitting at the table. The township definitely needs this kind of (recreation) infrastructure.» At present the proposed site for a com- munity sports dome is adjacent to École catholique secondaire de Plantagenet, loca- ted along County Road 17. The site, St-De- nis said, would be central to all the villages within the township and would also help to supplement the high school’s own phys ed curriculum and extra-curricular sports.

The tentative goal is to begin work on the dome project during the 2018-19 fiscal year. St-Denis has visited the sports dome at Alexandria, which cost about $1.2million for that community to erect, and noted that a facility similar in size and design would be suitable for Alfred-Plantagenet’s needs. Should council support the proposal

through the dome project and what interior design and facilities would be needed. St-Denis has begun contacting various community groups to enlist their support and help for the project. He noted that public input will be key to the project’s success. «We want to know what people would like to have,» he said.

and give staff the mandate to continue pursuing the idea, the next important steps are to continue developing the supporting partnership for the project, determine fi- nancing options, and also launch a consul- tation process involving both the general public and community and sports groups about what type of sports would be covered
