delay in making a response. He left all (probably a good money-making job as a hated tax gatherer), rose up (indicat­ ing readiness for action) and followed Christ (v. 28). Why don’t more'men fol­ low his example? What are some of the reasons men give for failing Christ today? The deep-seated character of the thing which Matthew did is shown by the feast he made for Christ. He wanted others to know the same Christ he had found precious. The supper was the means of getting the Saviour and sinners together (v. 29). What means are you using to get others face to face with Christ? At the feast Christ was criticized for m i n g l i n g with publicans (like Matthew) and sinners. This gave Christ the opportunity to make it clear that He came into the world to contact sinners in order to save them (Lk. 19:10). Today we shall read about the ways in which the Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God, showed His love for those around Him when He was upon the earth. The Lord Jesus caused some discour­ aged fishermen who had fished all night without catching anything to catch so many fish that their net broke! The fish­ ermen were so surprised and happy about this miracle that they left their ships and their nets and became His disciples. The Son of God showed His love for the sick and His power by healing a leper whom others hated and refused to touch. At another time, the Saviour healed a man who had not been able to walk for many years. This man’s friends lowered him through the flat roof of a house where Jesus was teaching because the multitude was too great for them to enter through the door. Not only did the Lord Jesus heal the sick man; He forgave his sins also. The Saviour came to save men’s souls even though their bodies might not be ill. He needed men to help Him in the work which His Father in Heaven had sent Him to do. One day the Lord was walk­ ing down the street when He saw a tax collector sitting at his place of business. The Lord merely said, “ Follow me,” and Levi, or Matthew as he is sometimes called, left his business to become one of the 12 disciples.
