PMMI Explores Brand Protection by Greg Kishbaugh

Flexo Inks Market To Hit $11 Billion The Flexographic Printing Inks Market is estimated to surpass $11 billion by 2024 and grow at an an- nual rate of 5 percent over the peri- od of 2016-2024, according to a report from Fractovia. On the basis of products, the flex- ographic printing inks industry is segmented into solvent-based, water-based, and UV-curved type. In 2015, water-based f lexographic printing inks market led the overall industry. Water-based product mar- ket is poised to see fast-paced growth due to favorable govern- ment regulations regarding the usage of low volatile organic com- pound-based inks. Solvent-based and UV-curved product are particularly preferred across the cosmetic and food packaging sectors. The Asia Pacific flexographic print- ing inks industry is expanding rapid- ly, having had more than 35 percent of the total volume in 2015. Chang- ing consumer lifestyle has positively impacted the end-user industries in the region. In addition to this, shift-

P MMI, The Association for Packaging and Processing Tech- nologies, has released The Brand Protection and Product Traceability infographic, which provides a visual snapshot of the issues facing converters and examines the complexities of

brand protection. The infographic is based on data from PMMI’s 2016 Brand Protection and Product Traceability market research report. “The need for brand protection and product traceability has a huge impact on the supply chain,” said Jorge Izquierdo, Vice President, Global Marketing, PMMI.“With the average cost of a recall for a food company being $10 million or more in direct costs, business interruption, brand damage and lost sales, the FDA Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) is driving food & beverage (especially food) suppliers toward more track and trace in order to better trace accountability for losses.” The infographic looks at the impact of several areas on the supply chain. Food recalls in the United States have grown four- fold in the past years, and 7 percent of products in grocery (Cont’d on Page 4)

Messe Düsseldorf Forms Partnership With IPAP Tehran Messe Düsseldorf, organizer of leading international trade fairs for the printing and packaging industries, has extended its portfolio to include an event in the Middle East. IPAP Tehran (Iran’s Printing and Packag- ing Industry Exhibition) powered by drupa will be held from October 12-15 at Shahr-e-Aftab (Exhibiran International), Iran’s most modern exhibition center. Staged in cooperation with the Iranian organizer BRP, the trade fair targets all suppliers along the entire value chain for printing technologies, from pre- press/print, premedia/multichannel, postpress, con- verting and packaging, materials, equipment, services and infrastructure. Retail Ready Corrugated Boxes To Grow 5.6% Annually Demand for retail ready corrugated boxes is pro- jected to increase 5.6 percent per year to $3.3 billion in 2020. Growth will outpace the overall corrugated box average due to continued solid expansion for revenues and store units among retailers that require RRP, specifically club stores and limited assortment deep discount grocery stores. Additionally, gains will reflect the presence of value added features on retail ready corrugated boxes, particularly high quality graphics and customization of box design. These and other trends are presented in Retail Ready Packaging, a new study from The Freedonia Group, a Cleveland- based industry research firm. The largest markets for retail ready corrugated boxes in 2015 were produce; meat, poultry, and seafood; canned food; nonfood; and beverages, which represented a combined 58 percent of total retail ready corrugated box demand. Among these leading markets, the nonfood market will experience the fastest growth due to a healthy outlook for club stores, which carry large selections of consumer non- durables such as toiletries, over-the-counter pharma- ceuticals, cleaning products, and paper goods. Among the remaining retail ready packaging mar- kets for corrugated boxes, snack food will experience the fastest growth through 2020, driven to some ex- tent by trends such as snacks in place of complete meals and the growing prominence of nuts as a pro- tein-rich snack. This will fuel a flurry of new product introductions of snack foods, including line exten- sions; products in nontraditional flavors and mixes of sweet and savory flavors; products in smaller sizes or unique shapes; and products that present a more fa- vorable nutritional profile or that are gluten-free.

The SCIENCE of flexo rollers and sleeves Skilled flexo printers know any variation in temperature, humidity, substrates and a host of other conditions will affect the quality of their work. Cleanliness of lines, accuracy of colors and softness of shades can make or break a job. But if you want to maximize profits, you need to optimize uptime, speed and quality. The anilox rollers and sleeves in your presses are only as good as the science behind them— the technology of precision . ARC rollers and sleeves are built to exacting OEM dimensions, with cell geometries engineered for efficient ink usage and precise volumes. Contact ARC today or visit our website to learn more about what the science of flexography from ARC International can do to enhance your graphics. See us at Info-Flex booth #208 .
