TERMINAL MODERNIZATION PROGRAM SAFETY CERTIFICATION As part of Pittsburgh International Airport’s Terminal Modernization Program (TMP), all officers assigned to District 1 must undergo emergency response training for the TMP. Each officer must attend a safety course offered by the airport’s Workplace Safety Team. After successfully completing the training, each officer is issued safety

equipment that must always be worn within the construction areas. This equipment includes a uniquely numbered hard helmet, ANSI Hi-Vis reflective vest, work gloves, and eye protection. Each week, police officers participate in a weekly safety walk within the TMP. The purpose of the safety walk is to identify potential hazards and familiarize officers with the site as it changes daily. The police department works with the airport authority, fire department, engineers, and construction companies to ensure a safe working environment.

TRAINING In January 2022 a sergeant and patrol officer were assigned to the police academy to implement, oversee, and document training programs for the department. With the increased training demands a dedicated cadre was needed to make sure the department follows state training requirements and develops best practice training for constitutional policing and officer safety. The training section provided the following training initiatives in 2022: • Monthly web-based training from the Pennsylvania Virtual Training Network on such classes as Domestic Violence and Victims with Disabilities • Investigating Strangulation • LGBTQ+ Victims • Narcan Updates and

• The Pennsylvania Protection from Abuse Database Ballistic Shield Training - This training was conducted at the officers/detectives' duty locations. The training was designed to train officers in methods of ballistic shield use during room clearing and vehicle assaults. The officers were trained and demonstrated their ability to deploy in one-man and two-man shield teams while utilizing their primary duty weapons. Traffic Stop Training - Officers were provided a safe environment for decision making traffic stop scenarios, utilizing simunitions*, to provide real life situations based *Simunitions are air soft type rounds used for realistic training.
