WHY SUMMER IS ALWAYS SPECIAL A Family Reunion
Summer is coming, so my wife and I will get to enjoy more time with our kids. Our oldest is coming home from college, and our middle daughter is graduating from high school. It’s incredible how fast our kids have grown, and all three have their own things going on. Now I think I understand how my parents must feel! My brothers, parents, and I have spent 30 years living in various regions across the country from one another. Fortunately, technology allows us to be almost together through Skype and Zoom. It’s not quite the same as being in the same room, but it beats a phone call or letter — both of which beat nothing at all. Still, the empty nest days are sneaking up on us way too quickly. So, it’s wonderful when we can all be in one place. But with so much going on, we must be careful not to lose sight of Mother’s Day. My wife has yet to announce her wishes for the day, but I know she’s getting the No. 1 thing she wants — everyone home together! Honestly, that’s my top wish for Father’s Day, too. I want a nice peaceful day where everyone is gathered and getting along. And having some homemade waffles is always a nice treat, too.
My family is never far from my mind, including at work. The playlist at Exceptional Smiles is a mishmash of all my family’s favorite musical genres. My wife is really into ‘70s music, so when some ABBA or Janis Joplin comes on, I think of her. And when the girls pop into the office and hear an ‘80s song, they know that’s Dad’s music. When T-Swift is dominating the day’s playlist, I know the girls have gotten into the Spotify account. It’s nice to have little reminders of everyone throughout the day. Family is at the heart of everything we do. Everyone at Exceptional Smiles is in the business of caring for your families, and we have gotten to know each other over the years. My longtime patients regularly ask about everyone at home, and I’m always catching up with the latest on their families. It’s one of the things that makes this job so special.
