How America Became a Land of Freedom and Opportunity Ever since our kids were babies, we’ve done what most families do on the Fourth of July. We hang out in our WE LIVE IN A COUNTRY WORTH CELEBRATING

From the time I was very young, my parents made sure to instill pride in my country in me. We’re a nation created under God,

backyard with friends and family, have a cookout, and light off some fireworks. Even if not as many of us are able to gather this summer due to some people still exercising caution in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, I don’t foresee this year looking much different. However, even if our Fourth of July celebration does look different than it normally does, that doesn’t take away from just how much this country deserves to be celebrated. The United States is a land of freedom and opportunity. It’s a place where, with a good work ethic and a lot of persistence, you can make a great life for yourself and your family. Because of that, over the past 200 years, we’ve become a diverse country that raises up some of the best, most influential leaders the world has ever seen. Leaders like George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Dwight Eisenhower, Martin Luther King Jr., Ronald Reagan, and so many others embody the best

and so I live by God, family, and country. Even though America’s fight for freedom ended over 200 years ago, the Fourth of July should be more than just fireworks and cookouts

— it should be a time to remember what it took to make us into the great nation we are today. Before I sign off, I can’t go without mentioning that the Fourth of July is a very

special day for my family personally. Fifty-one years ago, on July 4, my mother and father were married. Even though my father passed away a few years ago, it’s still a special time for me and my family to celebrate his life while also celebrating the country he loved and taught me to love. And finally, all of us here

qualities of any American, and they’ve paved the way for so many other bright minds and leaders to follow in their footsteps.

at Grand Strand Health and Wellness want to wish all our readers a happy Fourth of July! I hope all of you have fun, stay safe, and remember how blessed we are to live in the USA.

All the good we’ve done as a nation started with the principles the pioneers of the American experiment, the Founding Fathers, used to establish this country. They had a vision, a common goal, for the United States as an independent nation, free from the tyranny of monarchical rule, and they ultimately acted on that vision. They didn’t veer from the path that ultimately brought them to their goal. They stuck to it, and it was that dedication that led them to break away from the British empire and forge a path toward the bastion of freedom we know today as the United States of America.

CELEBRATING KATHY DYE

Grand Strand’s Patient of the Month

While it’s certainly hard to pick a patient to spotlight every month — we have so many who deserve a shoutout — this month we all decided that our patient of the month should be Kathy Dye. Kathy has been coming to our office for five years now. She was originally referred to us by her insurance provider. Ever since then, she has diligently followed our recommended treatment plans and reaped the rewards of doing so. Whenever Kathy comes into the office, she always has an upbeat energy about her. Her warm and heartfelt demeanor always shines through when she engages with the team and with other patients. Ever since Kathy started coming to Grand Strand Health and Wellness, she’s told others around her about the success she’s experienced in her chiropractic care. She even got her husband to start making appointments with us! Outside of her clear passion for holistic health, another one of her passions is baking. Kathy makes the best brownies in Myrtle Beach, and we devour them every time she’s kind enough to make a batch for the team at the office. She’s also a very creative person, and that shows in her knack for sewing. She’s always making custom shirts and bags for her family and friends — especially her children and grandchildren with whom she spends as much time as she can.

All in all, Kathy is someone who believes in supporting others, whether that’s her family and friends or her community at large. She loves giving back in whatever ways she can. At Grand Strand Health and Wellness, our entire team is excited for the next time she comes to visit, and we can’t wait for her next round of treats. Thank you, Kathy, for everything you do to make the people around you feel special.

Feel Bad About Throwing Away Photos? 4 RULES FOR GUILT-FREE PHOTO DOWNSIZING

RULE NO. 3: EDIT WELL If you have a lot of photos from a specific event or part of your life, think about how long each “chapter” of your life story would be. How much time would you

If you’ve reached a point in your life where you’ve started to downsize, then you’ve likely grappled with the difficult task of getting rid of photos. After decades of life, how are you supposed to choose which memories are important enough to keep and which aren’t? These four rules can help make this daunting task easier. RULE NO. 1: CUT SCENIC VIEWS You don’t need dozens of photos of that campsite you went to on vacation one summer. If a location was really meaningful, like the beach at your honeymoon, then keep a few, but pictures of the places you’ve been to are far less special than pictures of the people you love. RULE NO. 2: TELL A STORY When you look at a photo, does it make you want to tell a story about the people or places in the image? Could you share plenty of stories about riding around in Dad’s old truck or about how funny your best friend from college was? Keep those photos. Pictures of people whose names you can’t remember or blurry photos you can’t make out can all go.

spend writing about your cousin’s wedding or high school prom? If a certain event didn’t have that much meaning in your life, why dedicate pages and pages of a photo album to it? RULE NO. 4: THROW PHOTOS AWAY If a photo isn’t important enough to put in an album or frame on the wall, then it doesn’t need to stick around. Don’t put them in a box you’ll have to sort through later. Let the rejects go.

After all that hard work, treat yourself to a photo album shopping spree so you can start organizing the meaningful photos you have left.

Grand Strand’s Team Owner of the Month Celebrating Madison Steele

This month, Grand Strand Health and Wellness would like to spotlight its very own front line hero: Madison Steele. Madison is one of the newest team owners here at Grand Strand, having not even worked here a year, but you wouldn’t know it by how much responsibility she’s taken on and how she’s stepped up to the plate in this difficult and uncertain time. Madison joined our family to assist at our front desk, and when the COVID-19 pandemic began, she was one of the first people our patients saw when they came into the office for their appointments. Even at a time when smiles seemed scarce, Madison greeted every one of our patients with a smile as she signed them in and took their temperature.

Client Success “For the last three years, I have had severe diabetic neuropathy in my right leg. When I started the treatment, I did not know what to expect, but after three treatments, the result was better than I expected. The ladies in the office were very informative and let me know, through every step, what was going to happen. I had only been to a neurologist before and came here, and they did not detect any abnormalities in my spine. It is well worth the cost to have this done, and I liked all the treatments. I would recommend Dr. Garner and his staff. I would like to thank them all for their help.”

The Power of the Golden Spice

An Introduction to Turmeric’s Health Benefits THE POWER OF THE GOLDEN SPICE

People have raved about many superfoods over the past few decades, but one that’s garnered notable attention is turmeric. Fittingly known as the golden spice due to its orange-yellow hue, turmeric is famous for being a crucial part of Indian cuisine, ayurvedic medicine, and Chinese medicine. But does turmeric actually help people? And if so, how? Let’s start with the basics to find out. WHAT’S IN TURMERIC? First, it’s important to know what the spice contains and why researchers are so excited about it. Turmeric is packed with a chemical known as curcumin, which has been shown to provide anti-inflammatory effects, pain relief, antioxidants, and a decrease in the risk of cancer. Pro Tip: You should not consume excessive amounts of turmeric if you take medication that has blood-clotting effects, such as aspirin. However, a moderate amount typically doesn’t react with these or other medications and has many other benefits. CAN IT IMPROVE JOINT HEALTH? In many cases, yes! The Arthritis Foundation recommends taking a 400–600-milligram tablet of turmeric up to three times daily. Multiple studies cite turmeric’s ability to reduce inflammation and relieve arthritis pain, and one study even notes that turmeric seemed to work just as well as ibuprofen (Advil) for people with arthritis

in their knees. Participants in that study took 800 milligrams of turmeric every day. CAN IT HELP THE LIVER? Yes. One of the spice’s most notable characteristics is its powerful antioxidant abilities. Antioxidants play an important

function in our bodies. The average person is exposed to refined and processed foods, smoking, environmental pollution, and chemicals found in pesticides and drugs. Turmeric can protect the liver from damage due to these toxins, which also aids those who take strong medications known to cause long-term liver damage. CAN IT DECREASE SYMPTOMS OF HAY FEVER AND DEPRESSION? Some symptoms, yes. The curcumin in turmeric can help reduce hay fever symptoms like sneezing, itching, runny nose, and congestion. When used in tandem with antidepressants, turmeric may help reduce symptoms of depression. There are many benefits to using turmeric in your weekly meal routine. Try out some Indian or Chinese recipes or prepare some Instagram- worthy golden milk. In whatever you make, enjoy the rich flavor combinations turmeric offers!
