Housing subsidy increase approved

Local operators of subsidized housing in the Prescott-Russell region will get a bit of extra financial compensation for their services. The United Counties of Prescott-Russell council (UCPR) approved a resolution du- ring its Sept. 28 session for increases both this year and next year in the per diem sub- sidy that domiciliary hostel operators receive from the counties for each person living in a designated subsidized housing unit. The actual per diem subsidy of $51 per resident will increase to $53 retroactive to the start of September this year.The per diem will increase to $54 next year at the start of July and continue at that rate until 2019. Local operators of subsidized housing have lobbied the counties for an increase, saying that without a boost to the subsidy, the rising operating costs for hydro and other maintenance necessities could force them to reconsider whether or not they can conti- nue to provide a proper home situation for their clients. The UCPR resolution also sets a new limit of 460 for the number of residents in subsi- dized housing for whom the new per diem rates will apply. Trapped in trench A Rockland man was doing some home repairs when he had an accident and needed help getting out from under. Police, paramedics, firefighters, including members of the Ottawa Fire Trench Recovery Unit, were called to a private residence east of Rockland on Sept. 27 in response to an emergency call.The fire rescue specialists succeeded in getting a 57-year-old man out of a trench where he was trapped.
