Nulle n’est obligée de traverser l’épreuve d’un cancer du sein toute seule. Il y a diverses façons d’obtenir du soutien : famille, amis, médecin, psychologue, travailleur social… Et il y a aussi les groupes d’entraide, des cercles de femmes qui vivent — ou ont vécu — les mêmes difficultés et qui peuvent apporter un réconfort extraordinaire. Pour les femmes atteintes d’un cancer du sein, les défis sont nombreux et chaque étape de la maladie génère des sentiments. De l’annonce du diagnostic jusqu’après le traitement, lorsque les émotions se bousculent et surgissent d’on ne sait où, il est réconfortant de pouvoir communiquer, se sentir écoutée et surtout, comprise. Si vous souffrez de ce type de cancer, les groupes de soutien peuvent vous aider à passer à travers les périodes difficiles. Rejoindre un cercle d’entraide permet aussi d’obtenir des réponses à vos questions lorsque le jargon médical devient trop compliqué. Ensemble, vous partagez votre vécu, vos inquiétudes et votre
expérience, mais vous échangez aussi de la sympathie et des encouragements qui agissent comme un véritable baume dans les moments pénibles. Il existe des groupes de soutien pour tous les goûts dans la plupart des régions. Votre équipe de soins peut vous renseigner sur les services d’entraide à proximité de chez vous. Vous ne souhaitez pas vous déplacer? Inscrivez- vous sur Internet à un site d’échanges dédié aux femmes touchées par le cancer du sein. Ces forums confidentiels et anonymes regroupent des femmes de tous les âges et tous les horizons qui partagent leur passé, tissent des liens et développent une agréable complicité.
Once a breast cancer diagnosis has been confirmed, the next step is to determine the stage and grade of the disease. The TNM (tumour, nodes, and metastases) classification system is the most commonly used for breast cancer. The TNM system determines the size of the tumour and if the cancer has spread, or metastasized, to other parts of the body. Generally speaking, there are five recognized stages: • 0: the cancer is at a very early stage. Atypical cells have not spread beyond the ducts or lobules into surrounding breast tissue • 1: the tumour measures 2 cm or less. The cancer has not spread beyond the breast. • 2: the size of the tumour is between 2 and 5 cm, and/or the cancer has spread to nearby lymph nodes. • 3: the cancer has spread to the lymph nodes and may also be found in the muscles or the skin. • 4: cancer has spread to other organs or tissues.
Once the developmental stage has been established, the healthcare team then determines the grade, or the rapidity of growth and aggressiveness of the cancer, with a microscopic examination of the biopsy tissues. • Grade 1: low • Grade 2: medium • Grade 3: high Knowing the stage and grade of breast cancer is an important step in the fight against this disease; it is what allows the woman and her healthcare team to choose the most appropriate treatment.
