Neck pain can be a constant ache or sharp pain with movement, stoppingyoufromenjoying life’sactivities. Neck pain is very common affecting approximately 2/3 rds of thepopulationatonepointoranother.People withneckpainsuffermainlyfromoneof thefollowing conditions: Degenerative Disc Disease The discs are the fluid filled sacs between the bones of your neck. The normal aging process shrinks the discsanddries themout.Repeatedstressandstrain also weakens the tissues that make up a disc. When thishappens, thedisc loses itsabilitytoabsorbshock. In turn, thiscauses rubbingandchanges in theshape of the joints in your neck, which can be painful. Muscle Strain When there isan injury to theneckoryouoveruse the shoulderandneckmuscles, astraincanoccur. When this happens, the neck muscles may go into spasm to help support and protect the sore area. Mechanical Neck Pain Mechanical pain usually starts from changes in the neck joints. As discs start to collapse, the space

between the neck bones narrows, and the joints may become inflamed. The pain is usually chronic and is typically felt in the middle part of the neck. However, itmayspread from theneck into theupperbackor to the outside of the shoulder in some cases. Radiculopathy Pressure or irritation on or around the nerves of the neck can affect the nerves’ electrical signals. The pressure or irritation can be felt as numbness on the skin, weakness in the muscles or pain along the path of the nerve. Weakness in the spine muscles can causeabnormalpressureonthenervesand increased chance of radiculopathy. The DALMAC (Dick Allen Lansing to Mackinaw) Bike Ride takes place every year (since 1970) the week leading up to Labor Day. Approximately 1,300+ cyclists participate in this annual cycling event, with the majority selecting one of 4 different routes (which take either 4 or 5 days to complete) that start at Michigan State University and end at the Mackinaw City High School or across the bridge in Saint Ignace.

This was the 5th year that Glenda completed one of these rides, while this was the 1st year that John signed up for this adventure! He was the only rookie in our 5 person group! So what happened? Day 1, we pedaled 71 miles, stopping in Alma for lunch and ending in Vesteburg. We started the day with lots of energy and overall had a fairly uneventful day, until John’s 1st night camping in 35+ years! I (John) didn’t find it too easy to ‘fit’ in my mummy type sleeping bag, but did appreciate how easy it is to roll out of bed! Day 2, was our longest day (74 miles) ending in McBain while we dealt with head winds part of the day ( that’s me on the grassy slope recovering!) while that night temperatures dropped to 36 degrees! At 5.30 AM, we were seen sipping coffee in the school cafeteria! Day 3 consisted of a lot of rolling hills on our way to Elk Rapids and I earned the nickname

‘Bear!’ (That’s another story!) and we enjoyed dinner by the lake. Day 4, took us to Petoskey via the Charlevoix hills, which required all our gears to climb (our Tour de France!). Then finally Day 5, we arrived in Mackinaw City via Harbor Springs and the tunnel of trees, with pizza and refreshments waiting! Overall, we had tons of fun along the way and for some of us ‘a once in a lifetime experience’!

stir in the frosting until well blended. Melt chocolate coating in a glass bowl in the microwave, or in a metal bowl over a pan of simmering water, stirring occasionally until smooth. Use a melon baller or small scoop to form balls of the chocolate cake mixture. Dip the balls in chocolate using a toothpick or fork to hold them. Place on waxed paper to set. Decorate cake balls once set, as small pumpkins.

THANK YOU!

ARE YOU GOING TO BE OUR NEXT SUCCESS STORY? I NO LONGER WAKE UP AT NIGHT WITH MY HANDS NUMB AND TINGLING!

RUNNING STRONGER THAN EVER BEFORE! “I first learned about Mid-Michigan PT Specialists, when I attended one of their free educational workshops on low back pain. However, in my case my neck was actually more of a concern. I had a very painful and stiff neck while the pain would extend down into my shoulder. The treatment I received from my therapist Courtney was great. She would start with some massage like techniques and then she would stretch my neck. She was also very thorough in explaining how my exercises should be done. Since attending PT and doing my exercises, I can now turn my head without any pain while I no longer wake up at night with my hands numb and tingling, which was a problem I’ve had for a long time! ” - Laura F. “I felt so welcomed coming to Mid-Michigan PT Specialists. I couldn’t run the way I wanted to without shin pain before coming here and it was very frustrating. When I was first evaluated, they took me step-by-step through my recovery process and the cause and effect of why I was having pain; which made me very confident that they were knowledgeable and knew what they were doing. Each visit, I got stronger and stronger with less pain. Then about 6 weeks later, I was discharged while being pain free for 3 weeks and running stronger than ever before!” - Madison S.

BEFORE PT, I WAS EATING ALEVE LIKE TIC-TACS!

“My experience at Mid-Michigan PTSpecialists was wonderful! Before PT, I was eating Aleve like tic-tacs! My ankles were always swollen, I was off balance and I had to reduce my activity all the time due to pain. After a successful program of PT, my story is now completely different. I am now pain free, even

when working a 12 hour day on my feet!” - Dorothy H.
