Traineeships are for young people who are aged 16 - 24 and NEET (Not in Education, Employment or Training) who need additional assistance to get into employment or onto an apprenticeship. There are three types of Traineeships: Standard Traineeship: An eight-week programme - the first four weeks trainees are in college working towards Functional Skills. Trainees then complete a three-week work placement and one week to sit their English and Maths exams. Supported Traineeship: A mentor supported twelve-week programme for those with additional needs or barriers to education and employment such as low confidence, self esteem, social anxiety, etc. The first eight weeks are in college working towards Functional Skills. Trainees then complete a three-week work placement in the career field they are interested in before returning for a week to sit their English and Maths exams. Fast-Track Traineeship: A programme for trainees that already have English and Maths qualifications at the required level for an apprenticeship but need work experience and employability skills. Case study Willmott Dixon
“During our recent construction project, we collaborated with Sandwell College to provide opportunities for early-career talent. We facilitated employability sessions and hosted work experience placements for five NEETs (Not in Education, Employment or Training) to support them in fulfilling requirements for their traineeship programmes. A stand-out success story from this initiative is a Sandwell College alumnus, Olivia. Having completed her work experience placement with us, we were so impressed with Olivia that she was offered a summer internship. Following the completion of her internship Olivia decided to pursue a career with us and applied for a four-year Management Trainee programme which will see Willmott Dixon sponsoring Olivia while she completes a degree in her chosen field, as well as providing the opportunity to apply her learning through hands-on, real-world experience on our sites.”

Enrichment:
Want to add value to the College but don’t know how?
Careers Fairs Every month Sandwell College host a variety of careers fairs aimed at different sectors across the college group. We invite our partner businesses to showcase their organisation, speak to potential future employees and bring along live vacancies. Meet an Employer Throughout the year we run sessions where students get the opportunity to hear from people in the industry directly. Can your business deliver a short presentation or give a talk to students where they can hear about your experiences, learn about your industry and listen to any advice? These sessions are really impactful to our pupils, taking them out of a classroom setting and letting them explore different industry options. We deliver to students across our cohorts including our adult learners.
