Tax scammers still at work In April, some people may be rushing to get their income tax forms filed before the end-of-month deadline. Police warn residents that con artists are also rushing to make good on the “phony tax agent” scam. OPP in Eastern Ontario report several complaints about telephone calls, let- ters, text messages and emails from people claiming to be Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) agents. The scam falls into one of two types. The most common is a notice about a possible refund while the other is a threat if payment is not made for an outstanding tax debt. In both cases the victim is asked to provide personal identity information, including social insurance number (SIN), passport number, and/or bank or credit card numbers, to help clear the matter. The con artist may also provide a website to go to for filing the information. The CRA does not ask for identity information, like a SIN, which it already has in its database from past income tax files. The Ottawa Police Service needs help from residents in the City of Ottawa and sur- roundingmunicipalities to fill in some pos- sible gaps in the case of a man charged with sexual assault against a child. Police need to know if theremight be other cases involving this suspect that have never been reported. The department’s Sexual Assault and Child Abuse Section (SACA) has charged Nicholas Boudreault, 28, of Sherbrooke, QC, following investigation of a report of a man assaulting a 10-year-old child in the Ottawa area earlier this year. All other details of this case are withheld which might identify the victim. Boudreault is charged with sexual assault, sexual interference, and invitation to sexual touching. He was scheduled for his first court appearance on the charges on April 23. The police incident report states that Boudreault is known to have frequented the Ottawa-Gatineau, Embrun, and Lon- don areas over the past several years. Hawkesbury, Clarence, Casselman et Cornwall sont quelques-uns des endroits ciblés par la société québécoise.
