Jesüs said: “I will give unto thee [Peter] the keys of the kingdom of heaven”—qpt the keys to the church, nor to heaven, but to thé profession wherever the authority of Christ will be acknowledged. The “binding” and “loosing” do not refer to eternal con ditions, but to the discipline to be exercised in the profession on earth. n. T he R equisites for the C hurch (2 P et . 3:14-18) First, there must be constant dili gence. This watchfulness is necessary in order for the believer to be found by Him in peace, by the blood; and without spot and blameless, by the life lived. Continual’ cleansing by the blood of Christ and by' the Word are necessary for protection against Sa tan’s wiles, the world’s temptations, and the uprisings of the flesh. Second, patience must be cultivated. The mystery of God’s supposed slow ness always w ill demand a patience that endures. Third, daily caution must be ex ercised. The' devil is a master in counterfeiting. His errors so nearly approximate the truth that only by means of the Holy Spirit’s discern ment can the believer recognize the imitation. Fourth, growth must be apparent A ll treasures of wisdom and knowl edge are iii Christ, and safety is guaranteed to all who continually grow in Him.' III. T he H ope for the C hurch (1 J ohn 3:1-3) The word “behold” is used to call special attention to the1Father’s love

18 But grow In grace, and In the know ledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen* 1 J c}h n 3:1 Behold, what manner of lové the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not. 2 Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what w.e shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is. 3 And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure. LESSON TEXT: Matt. 16:13-20: 2 Pet. 3:14-18; 1 John 3:1-3. . GOLDEN TEX T: “ Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye steadfast, unmovable, al ways abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labor is not in vain in the Lord” (1 Cor. 15:58). DEVOTIONAL READING: Rev. 5:8-14. Outline and Exposition n T he S afety of the C hurch (M att . 16:13-20) the Baptist or one of the other prophets. His essential equality with God was not recognized. But when He asked His disciples who they thought He was, P e t e r answered, “Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.” This meant that Jesus was linked with God in a peculiar sense that pertained to no other than or be ing. It 'required a special, revelation from the Father for Peter to make this declaration. While Christ’s per fect humanity could be seen in some measure, no one could know that in Jesus Christ the eternal God walked among men—unless God gave this revelation. Following this confession of Peter’s concerning the person of Christ, the Saviour declared His purpose to build the church. The church was to be built, not upon Peter, but upon Him self. The Revised V e r s i o n margin reads, “Thou art Petros," meaning a piece of the rock, “ and upon this petra," meaning the bedrock from which the piece comes, "I will build , my church.” Christ had not as yet begun the. building; the church was still in the future when these words were uttered. And, because the Lord is both the builder and the founda tion of the church,* “the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.” BLACKBOARD LESSON O THE crowd, Jesus was merely a great man, such as J o hn 1
